Wesley Michael Tompkins, 79, Lawton, Oklahoma passed away Friday, January 24, 2025, at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center. He was born on November 25, 1945 in Edmond, Oklahoma to Jeff and Jim-a-lu Tompkins. Mike was born at home due to a lack of hospital space available because of soldiers returning home from World War II. He attended Deer Creek High School in Edmond, Oklahoma and graduated in 1964. He married Margaret Datin on October 2, 1965 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. In 1966 he was drafted by the United States Army and was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, serving as a fixed wing airplane and helicopter mechanic for two years. During that time he preached a revival for Mount Pisgah Baptist Church of Ft. Meade, Florida. That church called him to be their pastor, which would be the first of many churches Mike would lead over his lifelong career of being a leader and servant of the Lord.
To further his education, he left to attend the Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Florida. He was then called to pastor Bethel Baptist Church in Blakley, Georgia and then to Eden Baptist Church in Geneva, Alabama. At that time he decided to further his pastoral education at Mississippi College in Jackson, Mississippi (the equivalent of Oklahoma Baptist University for Mississippi). While there, he pastored a church in Bentonia , Mississippi. During that time, God worked to get Mike and Margaret back home to Oklahoma. Mike was called to preach at Southern Heights Baptist Church in El Reno, Oklahoma. He was there from 1980-1985 which led to his call as pastor to Leedey First Baptist Church. Five years later Knob Hill Baptist Church in OKC, Oklahoma called him to preach. He would stay there from 1986-1987. In his final stop as lead pastor, he was called to Fletcher Baptist Church, where all three of his children graduated high school. God called him to be the Director of Missions for the Comanche-Cotton County Baptist Association in1996 and he was definitely up to the challenge. He ministered to, directed, and oversaw fifty-three churches for twenty years.
Following his retirement as Director of Missions, he became a chaplain for a local hospice, ministering to countless families during difficult days.
Mike is survived by his precious wife, Margaret, who was with him every step along the way. He is also survived by two sons, a daughter and their spouses: Jeffry Michael and Laci Tompkins, Anadarko, Oklahoma, Christina Maree and Chad Funkhouser, Fletcher, Oklahoma, and Jason Mark and Courtney Tompkins, Elgin, Oklahoma; five grandchildren: Carson Funkhouser, Lexi Maynard & spouse JT Maynard, Cameron Funkhouser, Tiger Tompkins and Rigby Tompkins; his siblings, Roberta Smith, Fran Hastings, Lawana Maker and Rick Tompkins and wife Mary Lou; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ladonna McCarty, and brothers-in-law, Jack Smith, Jack Hastings and Ed Maker.
Memorial contributions may be made to the seminary scholarship fund for Tiger Tompkins, c/o Crossroads Baptist Church, P.O. Box 868, Elgin, Oklahoma 73538.
