Obituary

Funeral service for Weldon Bruce, 82, Lawton will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 9, at Trinity Assembly of God with Rev. Lloyd Grubbs, Pastor officiating. Mr. Bruce died Monday in a Lawton hospital. Burial will be in Letitia Cemetery, East of Lawton under the direction of Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. He was born June 22, 1929 in Telephone, TX to O.B. and Vera (Martin) Bruce. He was raised in Telephone, TX until the family moved to Eastern Comanche County, Oklahoma around 1946. The family left Oklahoma shortly after to reside in a government camp in California. There he met Opal Parks, and the two were married on September 21, 1947 in Kingman, AZ in a triple ceremony that included a cousin, Junior and Ova Bruce, and Opal's sister, Mary Ann and Alton Spangler. To this union, Weldon and Opal were blessed with the birth of Carolyn Sue Bruce in 1948. This beloved daughter passed in Sutherland, OR at the young age of nine. They were blessed a second time with the birth of Belinda Larie Bruce on April 11, 1959. While in Oregon Weldon built three houses on a lane he cleared himself, which was later named "Bruce Lane", and is still there today. Weldon owned a logging company in Oregon, until the three of them moved to Sacramento, CA where he supported the family by working as a farm labor contractor. He continued this line of work for years. Even after the family moved to Lawton, OK, he would still go back each spring and summer to Oregon to work as a farm labor contractor. Eventually he began to build apartments in Lawton, and also bought a piece of land, using it to sell used cars. He owned several used car lots over the years. While at his lot on Sheridan Road, he became co-owner of Bruce Brothers Drilling Co. with his two brothers Derrel and Jerry, and together they put together their first rig. For a short time, he raised and raced greyhounds. He eventually drew a complete set of blueprints by himself for a car lot which still stands on the SE corner of 4th & Lee Blvd. Weldon was a very caring, compassionate, generous and loving son, husband, father and friend who was loved, admired and respected by all whose paths he had crossed. He is survived by his wife Opal Nell Bruce of the home, daughter Belinda Larie Macks and husband Jerry Don of Lawton, brother Darrel Bruce and wife Helen of Lawton, sister-in-law Janice Bruce of Lawton, brother & sister-in-law Alton and Mary Ann Spangler of California, grandson Weldon Bryce Farris of Lawton, two great grandchildren, Bryce William Don and Austin Wade of Lawton and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Carolyn Bruce, sister Hazel Woolley and brother Jerry Bruce.
