Theodore "Ted" Chaat, Sr., age 91, Lawton, passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 in Lawton.  Ted was born February 26, 1925 at Southwestern Hospital in Lawton to the Reverend Robert P. and Elsie (Tahkofper) Chaat.  Ted was a lifelong resident of Lawton.  He attended Lawton High School, lettered in golf and graduated in 1943.  He then joined the Army Air Force in 1943 where he was an airplane and engine mechanic.  He completed pilot's school to fly fighter planes but the war ended as he was awaiting deployment.  Following his military service in 1947 he drove a cement truck for several years before becoming a letter carrier in 1960, continuing for 27 years.  His primary route was the northwest side of the city where he befriended many families before retiring in 1987.

Ted was an enrolled member of the Comanche Nation.  His Comanche name is Chahtinneyackque.  He enjoyed visiting the CIVA room and grounds at the complex where he pointed out the names he knew, telling stories of his friends who served in World War II.  For decades he served in many capacities as an active member of the Comanche Reformed Church where his father was minister.  He lived in, maintained his home and drove to his errands up until June of this year when he eventually moved to the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center.  Throughout the years he was an avid golfer belonging to several men's leagues and was a devoted Sooner football fan.  He married Ann Philippi on June 7, 1973 in Wichita Falls, Texas.  She preceded him in death on September 10, 1998.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Paula and Clodus Smith, Oklahoma City; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Tim Huston, N. Las Vegas, Nevada; a son and daughter-in-law, Ted and Kandy Chaat, Jr., Norman, Oklahoma; three grandchildren and their spouses, Charles and Emily Huston, Ankeny, Iowa, Lindsey and Michael Griner, Stafford, Virginia and Ted Chaat, III and his former spouse, Anna Scott,  Walters, Oklahoma; seven great grandchildren, Chloe Septer and Chase Huston, Bella Jean and Aubrey Ann Griner, Matthew, Brendon and Jesseka Chaat.

His parents, two brothers, Robert and Samuel Chaat, and a sister, Dorothy Tomah, preceded him in death.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center, the devoted nieces and their families who have provided support and prayers throughout the past several months.
