A joint, private service is being held in memory of the lives of Stephen H. Barber, who passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, and his loving wife Margaret G. Barber, who preceded him in death on February 9, 2023 at the age of 79. Married for 59 years, they are survived by G. T. Barber, Kathryn B. Hesskew, Scott Barber, and four grandchildren, as well as Stephen's sisters Teri Karrer and husband Gary, Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) King and husband Mike Raffetto, Margaret's brother, University of Oklahoma Professor Emeritus M. Prior to retiring as CEO of American National Bank in 1996, Stephen served on numerous civic boards. He was a staunch defender of Lawton's water rights, particularly regarding Lake Waurika and the Southeast Water Treatment Plant. A commercially rated pilot, he also served on the Lawton Airport Authority. Margaret was the co-pilot in Stephen's life, and they enjoyed travelling internationally. She was an avid gardener and homemaker who was well read, and well loved by all who knew her.
Stephen and Margaret Barber were preceded in death by his parents, George W. Barber and Phyllis M. (Lyons) Barber, her parents, F. Murray Gilbert and B. Ann (Japp) Gilbert, daughter M. Denise Barber, and Margaret's brother James (Jimmy) Gilbert, among others.
