Obituary

The Celebration of the Life of Shelia O. Lee, 50, Lawton, will begin at 2:00 pm Friday, April 8 at First Baptist Church with Shane Hall, pastor officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Shelia was born on March 10, 1961, in Kingsport, TN, to Barbara and Clyde Hoskins. She graduated as the drum majorette in 1979 from Church Hill High School, attended East Tennessee State University and later graduated with an Associate's Degree from Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma. She also graduated from the Institute of Organizational Management. Shelia began her professional life as a successful businesswoman in Hanau, Germany, where she was a retail specialist with Waterford/Wedgwood and as an accountant for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Once she returned to the United States, she began work in the field of career services, assisting others in the finding an appropriate career path. She moved to Lawton where she worked in Student Services for Draughon College, and later became a Fiscal Officer at The Marie Detty Head Start Center. She began her prominent Chamber of Commerce career in 1996 as the receptionist with the Lawton-Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce. Throughout the years, she thrived in many roles at the Chamber to include Military Affairs, Membership and Tourism, rapidly was promoted to Chamber Vice President and recently accepted the position of Chamber President. She served as a Board Member for the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, the United States Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Oklahoma, the Lawton Food Bank, the Oklahoma University Cancer Institute, and the Fort Sill Federal Credit Union. She was a member of Leadership Oklahoma Class XVII, the Lawton Business & Professional Women, the League of Women Voters, the Association of the United States Army and the United States Field Artillery Association. Shelia participated in numerous professional organizations to include the American Chamber of Commerce Executives Annual Convention, the Great Plains Association and the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association. Shelia was an instructor for the United States Chamber of Commerce and the Oklahoma Chamber Management Institute. She was also a member of the Artillery Order of Molly Pitcher, was a very active volunteer for many organizations, but she was most proud of her work with Army Community Services and military families who were in need. She worked numerous hours to enhance the "Loan Closet", a program designed to allow military families to borrow common household items while in transition between duty assignments. The program was unfunded and owes its success to Shelia's tireless efforts to ensure the care of soldiers and their families. Shelia will be remembered as a strong leader and a smart business woman who greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word, demonstrated in her famous perky telephone greeting "this is Shelia". She worked diligently to bring commerce and industry to the Lawton Fort Sill area and was perpetually promoting Southwest Oklahoma and all it has to offer. She was a cheerleader for the community and traveled extensively telling the "Lawton-Fort Sill Story". She worked closely with civic leaders, city hall and elected officials to ensure the economic growth of Lawton and southwest Oklahoma. Her business leadership was far reaching and Shelia had many, many chamber associates and friends throughout the United States. She was the consummate, polished professional who continually strived to improve on herself and those around her. She will also be remembered for her loving personality and her love for her family. Shelia loved hanging out with her closest girlfriends Helena John, Amy Ewing-Holmstrom and Julie Young enjoying a girl's night out. She also loved her weekly Sunday conversations with her mother and sister as she prepared Sunday dinner. Nothing made her more happy than to see her children grow and thrive as smart, free-thinking young adults as they gathered for their traditional Sunday dinners at home. She was always preparing for the next event, the next trip or the next day with a detailed list of tasks to be accomplished. She touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. She is survived by a daughter, Crystal Wright, Lawton; her twin sons, Dr. John R. Lee, of Jenks, Oklahoma; James W. Lee, Oklahoma City; Oklahoma; her mother, Barbara Hoskins, Church Hill, Tennessee; a sister, Lesa Patte, Seattle, Washington; a brother, Lamar Hoskins, Church Hill, Tennessee; a nephew, Chris Patte, Seattle, Washington, numerous cousins, many, many dear friends, and Tucker, her loyal dog.
