SGM (Ret.) Larry D. Evans, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Lawton, Oklahoma, where he had made his home since 2010. He was born June 27, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, to Stroud Evans and Winnie Billings.
Larry was a distinguished soldier who proudly served his country for 31 years in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army. He retired in 2002 as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army Reserve. A lifelong learner, he earned an Associate of Arts degree from Columbia College in 1992 and graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, in 1997. After retirement, he continued to serve as a private military contractor with the U.S. Army and spent nearly a year in Iraq during the war.
Beyond his military career, Larry had a deep love for the Old West. He delighted in visiting historic sites and collecting authentic Western memorabilia. He especially enjoyed caring for his own horse, trail riding, learning the trade of a farrier, and embracing a true "cowboy life."
Larry will be remembered for his devotion to service, his adventurous spirit, and his passion for the history and traditions of the American West.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his two brothers; Gary Hollis of Elk City, Oklahoma and Dave Kemp of Burbank California and by his two children; Traci and Chad, four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
