SFC (Retired) Timothy D. Winters, aged 57, of Lawton, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 in Oklahoma City. He was born January 5, 1966, in Reynolds, Georgia. Tim, the eldest of four children born to Betty Sue Posey, spent his formative years in Georgia.
At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army in 1983, beginning a distinguished military career. Tim served in the U.S. Army's Field Artillery, specializing in the Multiple Launch Rocket System. He was renowned for his mentorship, team-building skills, and exemplary leadership as a non-commissioned officer. Throughout his 20-year service to his country, Tim received numerous accolades and awards, including two Army Commendation Medals, five Army Achievement Medals, five Army Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He was also inducted into the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club for demonstrating unwavering dedication and exceptional professionalism as an NCO. Tim retired as a Sergeant First Class in 2003, leaving a lasting impact on those he served alongside.
Tim raised his family alongside his wife Donna. He had a remarkable sense of humor that left alasting impression on all who knew him throughout his life. He lived the high life at all times, and there was no convincing him of doing anything he did not want to do. Tim passed his values and stubbornness on to his three children, who are like him in so many various ways. Just like their father, Jennifer, Johnathon, and Kaeli can argue with the best of them, however, he also taught his children and grandchildren the importance of embracing life and loving each other unconditionally.
Though Tim spent his later years in Lawton, Oklahoma, his loyalty to his home team, the Atlanta Falcons never wavered. He enjoyed watching NFL football, often reminding others that the Super Bowl debuted the same year he was born. Tim found great pleasure in playing Texas hold'em, particularly during his weekly poker games with friends and family. One of his favorite stories to share was when he and Donna, on their 22nd wedding anniversary, finished first and second place in a Texas hold'em tournament in Las Vegas. Tim thought it was funny to then reveal to the other players they were husband and wife.
Tim cherished his dogs as if they were his own children. Dusty Dog would get so excited when he came back home from being deployed, Tim would often say he and Champ competed for the best life ever, and Mr. Gibbs was his most recent best friend and held a special place in his heart.
Tim was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Sue Posey, and his sister, Teressa "Sissy" Wainwright Tharpe.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Donna Winters; his daughter, Jennifer Simpson, and son-in-law Denson "Cooke" Simpson; his son, Johnathon Winters, and daughter-in-law Kelli Corning; his daughter, Kaeli Loera, and son-in-law JR Loera; his grandchildren, Ne'Avi Jackson, De'Vion Simpson, Kennedy Corning-Winters, and a grandson soon to be born; his brother, Tommy Posey; his sister, Tracy Summerlin; and his close friend, Moe Van Beurden. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. Tim and Donna's home was a sanctuary to many over the years, as he welcomed and mentored others as if they were part of his own family.
For those who wish to send flowers or plants in remembrance of Tim, the family recommends Flowers by Ramon or Scott's House of Flowers, both located in Lawton, Oklahoma.
