SFC (Retired) Roy Lee Dixon, Jr., 94, of Lawton, Oklahoma, passed away from this life to spend eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center. He was born on April 16, 1931, in Brookhaven, Mississippi (Lincoln County), to Roy Lee Dixon, Sr. and Lillie Mae (Keene) Dixon.
Roy graduated from West Lincoln High School in 1949 and attended one year of college at Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He enlisted in the Mississippi National Guard in November 1950 and transitioned to active duty in May 1951. That August, he enlisted in the Regular Army, where he served honorably until his retirement on September 1, 1977.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Roy served in Camp Stewart, Georgia; Korea; Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Bliss, Texas; and Italy. He also did multiple tours in Germany and at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He devoted 16 years of his service to the Pershing Missile System before retiring at Fort Sill.
The years Roy was stationed in Germany were good years. It was there that he met the love of his life, Anna Michels. They married on October 28, 1965, in Neckarsulm, Germany, and held a ceremony in a chapel at the beautiful Liebfrauenkirche in Trier, Germany. They later raised two daughters, Evelyn and Dorothy. While stationed in Germany, Roy enjoyed spending time with his wife's family, sightseeing, and participating in Volksmarches in the beautiful countryside.
Following his military retirement, Roy worked a variety of jobs in Lawton and furthered his education at Cameron University. He later joined Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, where he worked until he fully retired in 1989.
Roy enjoyed a full and active life. He liked to tinker and make things last as long as possible. He loved reading and sometimes completed over 10 books a month. He loved gardening and spending time with family and was a faithful member of First Baptist West in Lawton, where even in the not-too-distant past, he volunteered on Saturdays to help during the church's expansion project. He also volunteered for the American Red Cross at Fort Sill for more than 20 years and made lifelong friends during those years. When his wife's health declined later in life, he was a faithful aide in her caregiving until she passed in 2021.
The last few years, Roy was able to travel the country with his daughter Dorothy, a time she is extremely grateful for and will always cherish. During this season, he spent quality time with both his daughters, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He went paddle boating with his nephew and nephew's wife, rode the Natchez Trace Parkway, visited his brother and sister-in-law and other family in Mississippi multiple times, and was able to reconnect in person with a cousin in Houston he hadn't seen in more than 70 years. His family enjoyed the time as much as he did and will always cherish those visits.
In the last two months of his life, Roy had many professionals care for him. Many thanks to OU Medical Center, Southwestern In-Patient Rehabilitation, Comanche County Memorial Hospital, and Montevista Rehabilitation &
Skilled Care. Although he was not with them long, Roy's family is forever grateful for the compassion, respect, and kindness shown to Roy by the medical professionals and staff at the Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Home and CompleteOK Hospice. They were a blessing and a great help during a very difficult time.
Roy's legacy of faithfulness, service, and love will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Roy is survived by his two daughters, Evelyn Neal of Greenville, South Carolina, and Dorothy Bunn of Kingsport, Tennessee; four grandchildren, Grayson Pate Neal and fiancé Ashley Qualls of Moore, Oklahoma, Kelsey Catherine Smiley and husband Chris of Charlotte, North Carolina, Philip Dane Bunn and wife Emma of Hixson, Tennessee, and Chandler Victoria Scarbrough and husband Josh of York, South Carolina; four great grandchildren, Malcom Judah "Juju" Smiley, Penelope Jayne Bunn, Vincent David Bunn, Malachi Christopher "Mac" Smiley; brother Carroll Dixon and his wife Delores of Brookhaven, Mississippi; and many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one sister, Georgia Thompson.
