SFC (Retired) Donald Leonard "Don" Johnson of Lawton, Oklahoma, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the age of 78. Don died peacefully at his home after a long battle with heart disease. Don was born November 21, 1943, in Worcester, Massachusetts to Karl and Helen (Ayers) Johnson. Growing up in Carbondale, Pennsylvania, Don completed his GED and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. It was in the Army where Don met the love of his life, Sharolyn Oechsle. Don and Sharolyn were married May 14, 1965, at Fort Ord in Monterey Bay, California and were married 57 years before his passing. Don served in the U.S. Army for 20 years. During his military service, Don did tours of duty in Vietnam, Korea, and Germany. He was a Vietnam Veteran, earning both a Purple Heart medal and a Bronze Star for his bravery and valor in combat. He finished his military career as a Drill Sergeant at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he retired. Don later worked as a scheduler at Goodyear, where he retired after 19 years. Don then started a medical transport business named Compass Transit. He was the co-owner for several years before finally entering full-time retirement.
Don was a proud veteran and supporter of our military troops and their families. In his younger years, Don enjoyed spending his days fishing or golfing with his buddies and his nights going out dancing or playing cards with friends. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, old westerns, and more recently the Heartland series. Don enjoyed cheering for his favorite teams the Steelers and Sooners, dining out with friends, and occasionally visiting the casino. Above all, Don loved his family. His greatest joy was when his entire family were all together celebrating the holidays.
Don was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Purple Heart Association. Don was a member of Western Hills Christian Church in Lawton.
Don is survived by his wife Sharolyn, daughter, Sonya Waller and husband Darrell of Marlow, son, Jeff and wife Leigh Anne of Clinton, grandson, Josh Mercer and wife Cassidy, granddaughter, Sydney Weidner and husband Ean, greatgrandchildren Gentry, Jaggar and Jettson, brother, Karl Johnson and sister, Linda Witko.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Helen and brother, Bobby.
While Don will be missed by his family here, we look forward to joining him in Heaven.
