Memorial service for Ruth Keating Wiles, 84, Houston, Texas, will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Memorial Chapel, First Baptist Church, Lawton. Ruth Keating Wiles died peacefully Saturday, March 16, 2013, in Houston, Texas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. Mrs. Wiles was born in Purcell, Oklahoma, and lived in several Oklahoma towns, graduating from high school in Lawton. While in high school she worked in the Lawton public library. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and graduated with a B.A. from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. An avid reader and lifelong learner, Mrs. Wiles was a passionate and creative teacher, loved and respected by the many people who studied the Bible with her, as well as the students of Buckeye Union High School (Arizona), where she taught history from 1984-1999 where she also served as a mentor to other teachers in the school. While at the Buckeye high school, Mrs. Wiles led numerous student groups to Washington, D.C., under the auspices of the "Close-Up" program. These trips to Washington were a major delight of her life. She loved American history and was passionate about the political processes of the federal and state governments. She was also a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Married to John C. Wiles, a Baptist pastor, Mrs. Wiles served by his side in churches in Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. She provided leadership for youth groups, women's mission organizations, and adult Bible studies and was valued in all these churches for her counseling and spiritual direction. She demonstrated patience and wisdom in these leadership roles and did so with a quick mind and lively humor and an uncanny ability to accept anyone "where they were." She is survived by five children: John Keating Wiles and wife, Carolyn Joy (Wake Forest, NC); Thomas (Tom) Milton Wiles and wife Linda (Providence, RI); Nancy Virginia Wiles (Allentown, PA); James Robert (Jim Bob) Wiles and wife Lauri (Columbia, SC); and William (Bill) Andrew Wiles and wife Mary Anne (Houston, TX); eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Jeane Keating Shuman; and many treasured friends who have walked, cried, and laughed with her during her life. Her husband, John Wiles; her sister, Bette Eppler, and her parents, Milton and Virgie Keating preceded her in death. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the John and Ruth Wiles Memorial Mission Fund. Donations may be mailed to 407 N. Houston Street, Comanche, TX 76442. If flowers are also given, they may be sent to Becker Funeral Home, 1502 Fort Sill Blvd, Lawton, OK 73507.
