Obituary

Richard Dale Werstein, age 78, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family in the comfort of his home. His journey began on June 4th, 1945, in Mason City, Iowa, born to Anton Werstein, an immigrant from Hungary, who wed Emma Robb of Iowa. Richard was the youngest among his brothers: Don, Lyle, and Glen Werstein.

After graduating from high school in Iowa, Richard embarked on his first career in the Army. Initially stationed in Korea and later in Lawton/Fort Sill, he balanced his military duties with a part-time job as a cook at the A & W Root Beer Drive-In. During this time, he met the love of his life, Phyllis, of Lawton on January 19, 1968, with whom he shared 56 years of unwavering companionship.
Transitioning into his second career, Richard became a skilled plumber, starting with Dupler Plumbing and later moving to Gordon Plumbing. His expertise in the field then led to a fulfilling 20-year tenure in the Federal Civil Service after which he retired.  Retirement didn't quite suit him, prompting him to continue his plumbing work with the City of Lawton as Plumbing Inspecter ensuring the city's infrastructure ran smoothly. He was proud to have completed 30-years in the plumbing career.

Richard enjoyed gardening, fishing, golfing, hunting, camping and vacationing with his family and the Wichita Mountain Good Sam RV Club.

In 1998, he was baptized at First Baptist Church, where he remained a member until his passing.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and siblings. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his devoted wife, Phyllis, and their daughters: Terri Tugmon and her husband, Leon of Lawton and Sandi Glenn and her husband, Mark of Lawton. His presence will also be deeply missed by his grandchildren: Carlyn Finke Rivera and her husband, Richie of New Mexico, Weston Glenn and his wife, Amber of Oklahoma City, Chris Glenn and his wife, LilliAnn of Lawton and Reba Cole and her husband, Charles of Locust Grove, along with his three great-grandchildren: Francisco, Kylee and Tyler.
