Obituary

The family of Reed Harris, 80, Lawton will greet friends from 2-4 pm Sunday, October 20, at the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. Mr. Harris died Thursday, October 17 in Lawton. Committal services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 25 in the Garden Chapel at Greenwood Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born August 1, 1933 in Maud, Oklahoma to Edd and Ora Lou Harris. He married Laura Brooks August 3, 1954 in Plainview, Texas. He was a graduate of Maud High School and Wayland Baptist College in 1956 with a degree in English, Speech and Bible. In 1987 he received Master of Communications from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Reed's career was a mix of his interest in communications, ministry and missions. He worked with Royal Ambassadors at camps and churches as a student. He was licensed and ordained as a Southern Baptist pastor. He was a radio announcer and manager while also pastoring in several small central Texas towns. In 1961 he began work for The Southern Baptist Radio and Television Commission in Fort Worth as a department manager and Assistant VP. He returned to Wayland as Director of Church Services and Alumni Director from 1979-1985. He served as Director of Development and Church Services at University of Mary Hardin Baylor in Belton, Texas until he retired as Director of International Student Services in 1999. UMHB awarded him the Distinguished Service Medallion. After "retiring" he served as Director of Development for Highland Lakes Baptist Encampment in Spicewood, Texas. In 2005 he retired again and they moved to Lawton, Oklahoma to be close to family. Reed and Laura were active church members everywhere they lived, serving as a team in missions organizations, committees and associational work. His work involved many overseas trips to Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and the Bahamas. They were Mission Service Corps volunteers and loved international student work. Reed was known for handwritten notes to friends on birthdays. He faithfully remembered them for as long as his health allowed. He had a contagious smile and easy going spirit. He is survived by his daughter Cindy Harris Aday & son-in-law Phillip, grandson Travis of Lawton and grandson Andrew and wife, Lane of Stillwater, OK; brother Merle Jay & wife Rhonda, nephew Joe, wife, Kari and great nieces Rylie and Addison of Oklahoma City; brother Clinton of Dodge City, Kansas.
