Phyllis Celeste Werstein went into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus on the morning of May 24, 2025, at home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born an only child on the family farm in Zook, Kansas, Pawnee County on January 24, 1936, to Henry Francis Frank and Doris Maggie Frank (Shultz).
She graduated in 1954 from Zook Consolidated School. Throughout her life, she held an array of jobs. She helped on the family farm, worked as a medical librarian, as a graphic artist, hair stylist, a cook for Lawton Public Schools, managed the family-owned drive-in, A&W Root Beer, and finally retired at 74 after 25 years with Coca-Cola in 2010.
Phyllis was known for her outgoing and gregarious personality. She always shared her laughter and smile with others-strangers and friends alike. Phyllis loved a good joke and was known for making regular phone calls to family and friends to read the jokes she had clipped from the paper, printed out from emails, or found online to share a laugh. Her catch phrase was to tell everyone to "Have a Gooder Than a Better Day!"
An avid gardener, Phyllis enjoyed the fruits of her green thumb as evidenced by her garden and lush landscaping. An active member of the Good Sam RV Club, she collected rocks from all over the United States for her rock garden. Everyone knew her home by the little "Werstein Windmill" mailbox she kept at the entrance to her drive.
While not a vain woman, she prided herself in making sure she always looked her best with her hair doos and lipstick. Dressing up for special occasions and for her patrons at the A&W were her hallmarks of her personality. She shared her hair and makeup tips and tricks with her daughters as well as her granddaughters.
She took pride in all she did and strove to be the best at whatever job she held. Phyllis especially enjoyed cooking special holiday meals for service members away from families and loved ones. She wished to include everyone and make them feel as if they were at home.
Her grandchildren were beacons of joy in her life and she took pride in sharing with others their individual successes. Spending quality time with each of her grandchildren collectively and one-on-one were top priorities.
A natural educator, Phyllis enjoyed teaching her children and grandchildren various life skills including sewing, drawing, gardening, cooking and cleaning. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Lawton, for over two decades. Her highlights there were her years helping at VBS and calling on her care group members.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Doris Frank, and her husband, Richard Dale with whom she shard 56 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughters, Terri Tugmon and husband, Leon J. Tugmon of Lawton, Sandi Glenn and husband, Mark Glenn of Lawton, 3 grandchildren: Carlyn Rivera Finke and husband, Richard Rivera of New Mexico, Weston Glenn and wife, Amber Glenn of Virginia, Christopher Glenn and wife, LilliAnn Glenn with great-grandson, Theodore, on the way in July of Lawton, Reba Cole and husband, Charles Cole of Hulbert, and 3 great-grandchildren, Francisco of New Mexico, Kylee and Tyler of Hulbert, Oklahoma.
Phyllis was a precious soul and will be deeply missed by family and friends, but her legacy of love, laughter and generosity will live on through countless memories she created. Her quick wit brought joy to all who knew her, and her selfless spirit inspired us to be our best selves.
