Michael Charles Wickwire ("Mike"), age 67, passed away on the morning of Thursday, October 15, 2026.
Born September 1, 1959, in Meade, Kansas, Mike was the second of four children born to Charles and Carolyn (Crowley) Wickwire. He spent his formative years across the Great Plains, where he played football and baseball and was an active member of 4-H and FFA.
Mike earned his bachelor's degree in agriculture education from Texas A&M University in 1981. After completing his undergraduate studies, he worked as a vocational agriculture teacher in northern Texas. He then pursued further education, earning his master's degree in agriculture economics from Oklahoma State University in 1985.
Later that year, he relocated to Athens, Georgia, where his children, Jennifer (b. 1988), Kristie (b. 1991), and Tucker (b. 1999), were born. After many years living in northeast Georgia, Mike eventually moved to Lawton, Oklahoma, to be closer to his parents and siblings.
Mike had a variety of jobs over the years, working for companies such as Wingo Inc., Reynolds Lake Oconee, and Costa Farms Nursery, before joining the United States Postal Service from which he ultimately retired. In retirement, he enjoyed taking road trips around the United States to visit family, state and national parks, and baseball stadiums where he could catch his favorite team, the San Francisco Giants. He loved pastimes that kept him active and outdoors, including baseball, golf, tennis, pickleball, gardening, and hiking.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Carolyn.
He is survived by his three children: Jennifer Taylor and her husband Steve (along with their children Olivia and Colin) of Cleveland, Ohio; Kristie Wickwire and her husband Andrew Kahn of St. Louis, Missouri; and Tucker Wickwire of Athens, Georgia. He also leaves behind his three siblings: Tara Brown of Temple, Oklahoma; Trent Wickwire and his wife Karen of Bryan, Texas; and Rhonda McMurry and her husband Denver of Boyd, Texas; alongside many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Mike will be remembered by friends and loved ones as a kind and generous man with a green thumb, competitive spirit, and quick wit. A private memorial will be held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your favorite state or national park.
