Obituary

Graveside services for former Lawton resident Maxine E. Kern, 99, will be Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, 8900 Northwest Cache Rd., Lawton, OK. Her nephew, Dennis Freie will preside at the service.

Maxine passed away on September 29 in Oklahoma City. She was born February 2, 1923, in Anadarko, Oklahoma, to Ed and Ruth Freie. She graduated from Cyril High School in 1941 and attended Cameron University. She grew up on the family farm In Anadarko and her girls were blessed to get to spend many fun weekends and holidays there.

She was married to Clayton Kern on February 8, 1943, at Anadarko. They were married over 71 years.
She was a charter member of the Northwest Church of Christ in Lawton where she taught second grade for many years. After moving to Edmond, she was a member of the Memorial Road Church of Christ. As a young mother she was deeply involved with her three girls in church and school. She was a Bluebird and Campfire leader for many years.

She retired in 1983 from Ft. Sill after 20 years of serving as a liaison between host families and military personnel from many foreign countries. They adored her and became great friends. Many sent gifts from their native countries to show her how much she meant to them. She was also a member of AARP and NARFE.

Her last eight years were spent at Tealridge assisted living in Edmond where she developed many new friendships and enjoyed many activities. Although she was legally blind, she retained a sharp mind and good physical health. With the aid of her walker, she was able to outrun anyone – – all the residents and her children at times. She loved visiting with family and friends and no one was a stranger.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers and one sister – – James, Bert, and Ethelene.

Survivors include her three daughters and their husbands, Karen and Mike Hebert, St. Peter, Minnesota, Beverly and Larry Rehl, Ponca City, Oklahoma, and Linda and Dave Smith, Edmond, Oklahoma, six grandchildren, Jeff and John Dovolos, Regina O'Connor and Kari Rehl, David and Ashli Smith, 12 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Search Program, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, OK 73083.
