Memorial service for Mary Catherine Scherber, 80, Lawton, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2014, in Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Larry Landtroop, Aspire Hospice officiating. Mrs. Scherber died Wednesday, December 17, 2014 in Lawton. She was born May 13, 1934 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, to Kenneth and Doris (Clements) Knox. She grew up in Crawfordsville and was a 1953 graduate of Crawfordsville High School. Shortly after graduation she made the decision to move to Lawton to be near her sister, Bobbie. This move started Mary on her journey as a mother and sparked her long career with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Mary met and married Jerry C. Johnson and became a mother to Susan and in November of 1963 picked up her adopted son, Michael. Mary was devoted to her children, providing them with a future. She worked as a telephone operator and was a single mom until the early 1970's when she married David Hogan. He was a great help to her in raising her children and helping with Michael, who was in a body cast due to a bone disease. Mary was a hard worker and continued to advance in her career with the telephone company. In the early 1980-s she met the love of her life, Don Scherber, while working at Southwestern Bell. She retired from the telephone company after more than 30 years. She was very proud of her working years and had many beloved friends and coworkers. Following her retirement she and Don moved to Albertville, Minnesota, and she began the next chapter of her life. She worked at Farmers State Bank in Hamel, Minnesota. She enjoyed gardening, the outdoors, entertaining friends and was a great cook. Everyone will love and miss her banana nut bread. While in Minnesota a sudden illness struck Don and his health rapidly declined. During this time she was his caregiver and did an excellent job. Following Don's passing in 2012 she decided to move back to Oklahoma to be near her family. She enjoyed the time spent with her son and was able to reconnect with old friends. She was a beautiful person and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include, a son, Michael Johnson, and a daughter, Susan Johnson Wong and husband Victor, all of Lawton; two brothers and sisters in law, Fred and Carol Lou Knox and Wayne and Kay Knox, all of Indiana; three grandsons, John Schlactun, Lawton, Victor Wong and wife Cassie, Pennsylvania, and Michael Wong and wife Whitney, Lawton; six great grandchildren. She was also adopted grandma to Fayjon Renier and her children, Danja, Rylea, Alena and Bren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Bobbie Glasby. The family extends a special thank you to Aspire Hospice for the love and compassion extended to Mary.
