Marcelle Weems Bynum, 86, Lawton, passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019 in Lawton. She was born on July 13, 1932 in Fisher County, Texas to Leonard Arthur and Annie Lou Cenda (Keener) Weems. She graduated from Rotan High School in 1949. On September 3, 1949 she married Donald K. Bynum, Sr. from Snyder, Texas. Together, they raised five children. Because of her struggles having been born to a life without the luxuries so many of us take for granted, such as electricity and indoor plumbing, Marcelle believed education was the key to security and well-being. She was a lifelong learner. Throughout her thirties, she completed her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics while being an Army wife, raising five children and commuting to Chickasha attending the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. Thousands of students were touched by her love and kindness in thirty-six years of teaching life lessons and skills at Eisenhower Senior High School.
Marcelle's family took priority as she always showed them unconditional love and support. Her Beta Sigma Phi sisters were a close second. It provided the social outlet she needed to encourage and improve herself and others, affect her community positively and have a good time for 62 years while a member. There are too many organizations to name them all but some closest to her heart were her Sunday school class at First Baptist, Museum of the Great Plains Friend, Genealogy Society, Quilt Guild, Arts for All, Mayors Commission on the Status of Women as well as her various art classes. The decorative gourds she made at the Museum of the Great Plains are beautiful. Along with her sorority sisters they helped produce the Miss Lawton Pageant for many years.
Marcelle is survived by her five children, Dr. Donald K. Bynum Jr. and wife Paige of Durham, North Carolina, Glen Bynum and wife Cathey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Michael Bynum and wife Valerie of Springer, Oklahoma, Lucinda Henry and husband Mark of Lawton and Lavonne Bynum and fiancé Donnie Caldwell of Lawton, grandchildren, Amy Wisian and husband Joel, Allen Bynum and Ashlee McKee, Jeremy Bynum and wife Kim, Jennifer Bynum Taylor, Justin Henry and wife Morgan, Dillon Henry and wife Katelynn, Patrick Bynum and Jessi Galloway, Pier Fowler and husband Grant, Thorsten Rushing and Dyane and Saul Duran, great grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob, Wyatt, Macy, Alyssa, Brayden, Mia, Sylvia and Cecilia with two great granddaughters to be born this year.
Marcelle was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Cecil Weems, in-laws, Leslie and Lola Bynum and grandson, Stefan Rushing.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Museum of the Great Plains, 601 NW Ferris Ave., Lawton, OK 73507.
