LTC (Retired) Lyman A. Lackey, Jr., 84, Lawton passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 at his home in Lawton.  He was born April 10, 1934 in Greenwood, Mississippi to Lyman A. and Rena Mims Lackey.  He grew up and attended schools in Greenwood graduating from Greenwood High School in 1952.  He attended Mississippi State University where he graduated in 1956 with a degree in agriculture and as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the Reserve Officer Training Corps.  He was commissioned into the Regular Army as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery in August 1956. After completing initial training at Fort Sill where he completed the Field Artillery Basic Officers Course and Fort Benning for Airborne training, Lyman had tours of duty that spanned a twenty four year active Army career.  Lyman's assignments included, Field Artillery positions at battery, battalion and division Artillery levels in the Third Infantry Division, Eighty Second Airborne Division, and the First Infantry Division as well as I Corps Artillery.  In addition to his stateside assignments at Fort Benning, Fort Bragg, and Fort Sill; Lyman completed assignments in Germany, Korea, Hawaii and Vietnam. He met Anita Kirkland while at his first assignment at Fort Benning, Georgia. They married in Douglas, Georgia in October 1961.  The last eight years of his military service were spent at Fort Sill in a variety of jobs including Command of the U.S. Army Field Artillery Staff and Faculty Battalion and working for the TACFIRE TRADOC System Manager in the final testing and fielding of the Army's first fully automated Fire Direction and Fire Control System (TACFIRE) for the Field Artillery.  In addition to his operational assignments, Lyman graduated from the Air Defense Officers Advanced Course and the Command and General Staff College.  His awards and decorations include; Parachutist Badge, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service medal and the Army Commendation Medal. After retiring from the Army in 1980 he worked as a consultant for TELOS, to further develop and maintain Fire Support Software for the US Army. He retired from TELOS in 1997.  He was a member of The Military Order of the World Wars, the Association of the U. S. Army, and the Military Officers Association of America.

Lyman's greatest passions were his family and friends.  In their many years in the Lawton/Fort Sill area, the family was very active with The Artillery Hunt Club.  They spent many hours at horse shows around the state and supporting "the Hunt" on Fort Sill. In addition to "the Hunt" Lyman loved spending time with his friends hunting and fishing all over southwest Oklahoma.  Lyman loved every cold, hot and wet and sore minute outdoors with his friends.  He was a tall man, bigger than life and will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his daughter Beth Loewen and husband Ed and granddaughter Kelly.

Lyman is preceded in death by his wife  Anita,  his parents and his brother, Gordon.
