Memorial Service for Leslie Ann Maddox, 70, Lawton, will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, 2602 NW Ferris Avenue. Leslie died Monday, April 1, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. Leslie was born October 2, 1942, in Oklahoma City to Dr. Leslie and Mrs. Alice Hamm. She was raised in Lawton, Oklahoma and graduated from Lawton High School in 1960. On June 24, 1961, Leslie married Jim Maddox. They established their home in Lawton and raised three children. After she was married, Leslie went on to get her Bachelor's Degree from Cameron University and her Masters Degree from the University of Oklahoma. Leslie spent her professional life in education and professional leadership training. She started teaching at Lincoln Elementary, moved on to professional leadership training with the FAA and she ended her long career at the Great Plains Tech Center. For over 40 years, Leslie enjoyed most Sundays with her Methodist Sunday School group. They provided her with lively discussion, spiritual support and insight and much laughter over the years. Leslie also maintained contact with 16 of her closest girlfriends from high school, known as the Women of the Envelope. In addition to her family, these friends remained a constant source of friendship, understanding and unparalleled humor throughout her long life. She recounted numerous stories of how all of these ladies provided her with examples of grace and undying friendship at just the right time throughout her life. Leslie was also a devoted, albeit uncompensated, political consultant to her husband Jim for several years. She loved the discussion of politics and the planning of politics in the effort to improve her local community for all members of the community. Leslie was a long-time supporter of the Road Back Program in Lawton and the New Directions Women's Shelter in Lawton. Survivors include her husband Jim Maddox, of 52 years; two daughters Cathy and Debbie of Oklahoma City; and a son Mike and daughter-in-law Michelle of Yukon; two brothers, Tom and Jim Hamm of Safford, AZ and Vancouver, Oregon. Leslie has five grandchildren who were the light of her life, to include Jake Ratliff and his wife, Kelsy of Cache; Jordan Lindley of Oklahoma City, McKinsey Norton of Oklahoma City; and Jillian and Kate of Yukon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Leslie Hamm and Alice Hamm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Road Back, Inc., 102 SW 12th Street, Lawton 73501; and to the New Directions Women's Shelter, PO Box 1684, Lawton 73502.
