Obituary

Memorial services for Keith Lavender, 69, Lawton, will be held on Saturday, February 14th, at 2:00 PM at Cameron Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Teel, pastor officiating. Mr. Lavender died in an automobile accident, Sunday, February 8th in Kiowa County. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. Keith was born July 31, 1945, to Walter and Jean Lavender in Frederick, Oklahoma. He moved to Lawton in 1962, immediately becoming a force on the Lawton High School's Wolverine football team. During his two years as starting linebacker for the Wolverines, Keith helped lead them to back to back State Championship titles, while garnering All-State Honors for himself, as well as being named the Oklahoma High School Defensive Player of the Year. He finished his high school football career by being voted MVP in both the All-State game, and the Texas/Oklahoma Oil Bowl. Upon graduating from LHS in 1964, Keith continued his football prowess at Cameron Junior College, helping the Aggies compile a winning season that led them to the Junior Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. In 1965, he was named to the Junior College All-American team. Transferring to East Central State University in Ada in 1966 for his final two college years, Keith added Small College All-American Honors to his resume before earning his Bachelor's Degree in 1968, followed by his Master's Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He joined the coaching staff and faculty of Cameron University in 1968 where he served until his retirement in 2006. After retiring from education, he started, owned, and operated All-Pro Roofing here in Lawton. Keith married Nancy Bride in 1964. From this marriage, two sons were born, Robert Keith Lavender, Jr., and Jeffrey Kevin Lavender. In 1987, Keith married Bunny Brittain, adding her three daughters, Kristy Rednose, Kim Douglas, and Sammi Wehmuller, to the family that he loved so very much. He is survived by his children, three brothers, Jay Lavender, and his wife, Gloria of Wichita Falls; Walter Lavender, and his wife, Sharon, of Waco Texas; and Mickey Lavender of Lawton; his grandchildren Courtney and Trey Lavender of Edmond, Brittainy and Justin Rednose of Lawton, Jordan and Caleb Wehmuller, of Colorado Springs, and David Kropp of Tulsa; great-granddaughter, Kamryn Champion of Lawton; nephews, Mike Lavender of Wichita Falls and his children Chey, Jaedon, and Miranda; Jayson Lavender of Frisco, Texas and his children Jaxson, Kenzie, and Lexie; Walter's son and daughter Clint and Jennifer; and Mickey's son and daughters, Jake, McKenna and Maddie of West Virginia. Along with the extended family Keith leaves behind, he will also be missed and remembered by the many close friends and associates with whom he shared the sixty-nine years of life he lived to the fullest each day he was given. In lieu of flowers the family and numerous friends who believe Keith's memory should remain a part of the school that gave him so much, are asking donations be made in Keith's name to the Cameron University Foundation, to establish a Keith Lavender Athletic Scholarship Fund for athletes deserving reward and assistance during their time at C.U.
