Obituary

Graveside funeral services for former Lawton resident Kathleen Speer Peace, 101, will be held at 10:00 am Monday at Highland Cemetery. Kathleen passed away November 6, 2010, in Houston, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Kathleen was born in Adairsville, GA, on November 18, 1908, to Joseph Bigham and Annie Laurie Peace. The family settled in Lawton around 1920, where Kathleen attended Lawton public schools. She was captain of the 1927 Lawton High School women's basketball team that won the national championship in Wichita, KS, earning her the first of three All-American basketball awards. Kathleen moved to Dallas in the early 1930's to work for Employer's Casualty Insurance. While she worked as a legal secretary for the company, she also enjoyed great success as an athlete on the company's basketball, track and softball teams, the Golden Cyclones. Kathleen and Babe Didrikson Zaharias led the basketball team to the AAU national basketball championship in 1931. Kathleen was twice named an AAU All-American in basketball, and also set what was at the time the Southern AAU record in the high-jump. Kathleen returned to Lawton in the late 1940's to care for her ailing parents, and lived in Lawton until the late 1990's. She worked as a secretary at Howard and Howard Insurance, then as a graphics artist at Fort Sill until she retired. Kathleen was an artist, published author and city bowling champion. Kathleen will join her parents; her sisters Nelle Ricketts, Betty Jo Walden and Louise Heaps; and her brother Jack Peace in the family plot at Highland Cemetery. She is survived by her two nephews and their wives; Mike and Patricia Ricketts of Sugar Land, TX, and Tim and Marie Ricketts of Reno, NV; and a cousin and his wife, Dr. James and Peggy Jo Hartley of Elizabethtown, KY.
