Karen Beavers, 63, Lawton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 30, 2018 at her home in Lawton. Karen was born to Burton and Wilma (Swingle) Chapman on September 20, 1954 at Beale Air Force Base, California. Karen was an Army brat and was raised on several Army posts around the world until her family settled at Fort Sill. At that time the family lived in Cache where Karen graduated from high school in 1972. In June of 1973 she was blessed with her only child, Manuel (Manny) F. Vega, III. She attended college and earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Cameron University. She was considered a forever student in college. In the fall of 1990 Karen met Darrel Beavers and they were married on October 5, 1991 in the Wesley Chapel southwest of Lawton. At that time Karen began her teaching career at Lawton High School as a home economics and computer teacher. She was always fascinated with technology. Karen later became the yearbook (Lore) sponsor for Lawton High School. While she was a yearbook sponsor and teacher she touched thousands of lives, often with a kind word or smile when needed. If you made a mistake she would also lecture you about your mistake and what it would take to rectify the situation. Karen not only taught you educational skills but she also taught very important life skills. Karen was a great faculty member at Lawton High School and was always willing to help other teachers and support staff. She always was very involved with her student's activities. Karen had just recently retired from Lawton Public Schools in May of this year.
Karen was the "grandma of legend" to Alexis Dean Vega and Dylan Asher Vega. She loved her grandchildren to the moon and back, always attending any and all activities. She was an avid football fan and loved going to watch her kids play sports from son Manny in his high school years to the countless ones that she touched so much they called her mom. She was involved in many groups and organizations and was always willing to share her knowledge or take you on a new adventure. Karen lived her life to the fullest.
She is survived by her husband Darrel of the home, son, Manny Vega of Cache, grandchildren, Alexis and Dylan Vega of Cache, brother, Burton O. Chapman, Jr. and Annette of Waymart, Pennsylvania, sister, Priscilla Brunck and Joe of Port St. Lucie, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Reve Beavers, brother, Thomas Chapman, aunt, Leola Dixon, and cousin, Betty Wilson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Karen Beavers Memorial Scholarship Fund, BancFirst, 3801 NW Cache Rd, Lawton, OK 73505-0489 or contributions can be made using a PayPal account.
