June is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Forest D. "Del" Harris, mother and stepfather, Hazel Dell and Marlin Mann, her dear grandmother, Claudy Ann Davis and uncle, Stanley Herring. June was born December 1, 1928 in Wichita Falls, Texas. She lived there until she met and married Dr. Del Harris of Lawton, Oklahoma in 1961.
June grew up in humble beginnings with a single mom and grandmother. Growing up in the great depression was very difficult for June and her mom. June was raised partially by her grandmother while her mother attended nursing school to support herself. Her mom, Hazel Dell Mann was a career nurse in Wichita Falls.
June attended Wichita Falls public schools in her primary school years and the Catholic High School for girls in Wichita Falls. June then attended Midwestern State University where she majored in Art. Upon graduation from college, June worked for a Wichita Falls downtown bank for most of her working career until she met Dr. Del Harris on a "set up" date by her paternal grandparents.
Upon arriving in Lawton, she became a homemaker and stepmother to Raymond while supporting Dr. Harris in his medical practice. June was always hard working and industrious and became quite active at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, serving on the Alter Guild and The Vestry along with doing so many other service-oriented activities for the congregants. June was active in PEO, Junior League, Garden Club, Camanche County Medical Auxiliary, along with almost every civic organization possible. She was known as a good friend to so many.
June's love of cooking and homemaking inspired her to become a businesswoman and create and establish Gourmet Gadgetre in Lawton in 1980. Gourmet Gadgetre was one of the finest gourmet stores in Southern Oklahoma. There you could purchase coffee, teas, fancy food and anything for the kitchen or home along with bridal and baby gifts. June created a store that was quite unique for Lawton and was constantly going to the Dallas Market to obtain the latest kitchen gadgets for her store. She had a reputation as a shrewd businesswoman who provided so much for the Lawton and Fort Sill community.
June and Del loved to travel. Del would go on numerous cruises for his medical continuing education around the world and June would enjoy the opportunity to attend exotic places such as Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Egypt, the Mediterranean, Europe and of course, one of the favorites, New Orleans.
As a homemaker, June could not be outdone with her beautiful backyard with many exotic plants, including two greenhouses fully stocked. She could have easily been a horticulturist. She certainly loved God's nature and showed it by growing the most beautiful exotic flowering plants. There were always banana trees to boot.
June had many friends that would come visit her and vice versa. She loved telling tall tales, usually accentuated with some mild cuss words while drinking her favorite rose wine. She loved to entertain and many in Lawton enjoyed the hospitality shared in her home over the many years. She and Del loved to entertain so many in the community. They could really put on a party.
June is preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Dr. Del Harris who passed away in 2005. Later, she became great friends and a companion with Omar Calciolari, whose two daughters, Susie Dodson and Kim Erwin, became like children to her. June loved their children, Molly, Hannah, Abby and Hunter, who became adopted grandchildren. Upon Omar's passing, June stayed in close contact with these siblings who loved and cared for her over the years.
Son, Raymond and his family would like to gratefully acknowledge the undying immense appreciation to Robert Hayek for faithfully serving not only Dr. Del Harris but June as well for the past 30 years. They are so thankful for Paige Brown, Irene Tate, and Kylie Gwinn for their professional, loving care. The family is so appreciative of Hospice of Lawton for their care in the last days.
June expressed her faith in Jesus Christ when she was young, going to church with a neighbor. Raymond discussed her faith numerous times and June was convinced that she would stand before the Lord Jesus Christ with welcoming arms. June faithfully attended St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for most of her adult life.
Memorials may be made to two entities that June wanted to bless. Midwestern State University – School of Nursing in Wichita Falls in memory of her mother Hazel Dell Mann and Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri in memory of her late husband, Dr. F. D. (Del) Harris.
