Jonna Sue Johnson Shklar was born January 12, 1950, in Alva, Oklahoma to Albert F.(Ab/Jonnie) and Laverne May Johnson, both being integral parts of the Greatest Generation. She also was the little sister of AW (Wes)Johnson. She was a graduate of Alva Public Schools and earned a BA and MA Ed from Northwestern State College(now NWOSU) in Alva. After a lifetime in several different Protestant churches worshiping Christ Jesus and a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, she passed to the other side of the Cross on September 17, 2025.
She was pre-deceased by her parents and sister-in-law. She is survived by her husband Mike of the home, her brother Wes in Cimarron, KS; daughter Tonya and husband Mark Burns, and granddaughter and 3 great grandchildren, all of Troy, MT. Also survived by son Michael and wife Sherry Shklar, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, all in Oklahoma and numerous other relatives. She also counts as family 6 very special sisters in Christ: Penny Morelly, Pam Stokes, Margarett Gibson, Joy Kitchens, Anita Farris (deceased), and Eva Hennessee.
She followed in her brother's footsteps with his love for music, tennis, and then teaching (1973-1998) at various schools in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. She influenced countless student's lives. Jonna was a gifted tennis player in high school and college and taught others how to play by private instructions. Later in life she was an avid reader, especially her Bible. Along with tennis, she loved to bass fish and absolutely enjoyed fishing with her husband on the ponds around Alva. In 1974 she married Ted Bugg, who died in 1975. In 1991 she married Mike Shklar. They continued teaching and coaching and moved back to Oklahoma to finish her career in 1998 when they began their own business and moved to Lawton, OK. In 1993 she and Mike were re-baptized in Barnsdall, OK; then in 2001 they joined Western Hills Church of Christ. She worked in their business until 2017 when she began working part time at the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center memory care unit until 2019. There she learned much about love, faith, and perseverance.
Since 2000 she has traveled with Mike on their purple Harley-Davidson to KS, NM, CO, TX, WY, AR, and all over OK. They also traveled to ME, and along the east-coast to NY, where they tried to not look like tourists, many other states for business, and to MT. Jonna love the Lord Jesus Christ and in her quiet manner was truly a shining light for Jesus. Her words were always carefully spoken to encourage others and show how she loved them. Oh, how she loved her grandkids and great grandkids. Her quiet gentleness, kindness, humility and graciousness, and dry wit humor will be missed by all who knew her. Now she has her crown of righteousness in Paradise with Jesus.
A memorial will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Western Hills Church of Christ.
