John Julius Thorne, Jr., of Lawton, OK, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026 at the age of 77.
Born November 7, 1948 in Wilson, North Carolina, John was the son of the late John Julius Thorne, Sr. and Gwendoyln High Thorne. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from May 1970 to November 1971 during the Vietnam War era. Although he did not serve in combat, he answered the call to serve with honor and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of his military service.
Following his military service, John built a long and respected career as an automotive transportation specialist in the trucking industry. For 34 years, he traveled countless miles on the nation's highways, transporting vehicles and various other loads across the country. His strong work ethic, dedication, and reliability earned the respect of those who worked alongside him. He retired in 2020 after decades of faithful service.
Outside of work, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved fishing, camping, the occasional practical joke, and taking cross-country road trips, especially when they led to historical sites and America's beautiful national parks. He appreciated the opportunity to see the country and enjoyed sharing those experiences with the people he loved.
More than anything, John treasured his children. He was a father, grandfather, and friend who cherished the time he spent with others. His humorous spirit, booming strength, and generous heart will be remembered by all who knew him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved grandson, John Theodore Thorne, son of Kevin and Anne Thorne, and brother-in-law, William "Bill" Collins.
He is survived by his four children: Kevin Thorne and his wife, Anne, and their daughters, Harley and Vida; Stephanie Guynn and her husband, Clay; Hillary Walker and her husband, Bobby, and their children, Tyler, Alexis, and Miah; his youngest son, John E. Thorne; his brother William "Billy" Thorne; and his sister Linda Thorne Collins. He also leaves behind extended family members, faithful friends, and loved ones who will forever remember him dearly.
Those who knew John will forever remember the way he ended almost every goodbye. Before parting ways, he would always ask for "one favor," and then with a smile say, "You stay pretty and be sweet." Those simple words reflected the kindness, warmth, and adoration that defined the way he lived. They will continue to echo in the hearts of his family and friends for years to come.
John's legacy is one of service, perseverance, adventure, and love for his children. While his absence leaves an immeasurable void, the memories he created, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave will remain with those who knew him always.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 9 o'clock in the morning at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, OK. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of John's life. The funeral procession will be provided by Becker-Rabon Funeral Home, starting at 8:30 in the morning from 1502 Fort Sill Blvd, Lawton, OK and traveling to the cemetery.
