Obituary

Funeral for John Franklin Lewis, 87, will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 23, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Al Potts officiating. Mr. Lewis died on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in Lawton. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. John was born on Jan. 16, 1926, in Comanche, Oklahoma to John F. and Rhoda Izora (Hale) Smith. He moved to Truce in Jack County, Texas, at a young age. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy in 1943 and served proudly until 1946 as the youngest crewman aboard the submarine USS Pintado. He married Jane Kinzer Callicott in Grandfield on Jan. 9, 1976. In his early days in Lawton, he was a fireman; but he made his career as an electrical contractor who owned and managed Industrial Electric and was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for sixty-five years. To his many friends and associates, John was perhaps best known for his diverse hobbies, which included raising animals as diverse as Brahman cattle, Texas longhorns, buffalo, miniature donkeys, llamas and camels; collecting and restoring vehicles such as Rolls Royces, fire trucks, Model T era vehicles, tractors and many other military and industrial style trucks; collecting minerals, gems, beads, and antiques from around the world, but especially those celebrating the American West, Native America, and Africa; and establishing farms in Truce (Texas), Sterling, Faxon, and Indiahoma. He never hunted an animal but loved hunting for antlers and horns from Oklahoma to Wyoming. His skilled hands could make anything; and his elaborate jewelry, furniture, and indoor and outdoor knick knacks have enriched the lives of countless family and friends. Survivors include his wife Jane, of the home; his three daughtersJohnnye Friedrich, Kathy Freeman (and spouse Terry), and Neta Beauchamp (and spouse Barry); and seven grandchildrenGary, Karl, and Paul Friedrich; Erin and John Michael Freeman; and J.T. and Pryce Beauchamp; a brother, Milton D. Lewis; a half-sister, Virginia O'Keefe and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, 5 half-brothers: Lester Smith, S. T. Smith, Weldon Smith, Jinks Lewis and Carnes Lewis; 3 half-sisters: Claudie Belle Deatherage, Velna Long and Pauline Lewis. The family will greet friends from six to eight p.m. on Friday at the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
