He moved back to Columbus, Kansas, where he was drafted by the United States Army and served as a Sergeant stationed in the Pacific Theater for 3 years. After an honorable discharge, Joe attended college at Northeastern A&M where he played basketball alongside his brother, Frankie, and was later inducted into the NEO Basketball Hall of Fame where his picture still hangs. He received his BS in Education from Pittsburg State, Pittsburg, KS and began to teach and coach in Goff, KS. He taught history and English while coaching boys and girls basketball as well as baseball for 4 years. During that time, he received his masters in Education Administration from the University of Kansas. In 1960, Joe and his family relocated to Lawton where he went to work for L.G. Balfour Company selling class rings, announcements and caps and gowns. He took a nonexistent territory of 4 school accounts to over 80 schools in western Oklahoma where he gained many true friends along the way. He and his wife, Perrillia, also had a very successful horse ranch east of Lawton raising and showing Arabians and later miniature horses. He retired in 1995 from Balfour and the horse business after 35 years where he continued to be very active in his grandchildren's lives.
