Jimmy Royce Stanton Sr. passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the age of 87. He was born on April 30, 1938, in Lawton to William Holland and Dorothy Opal (Walker) Stanton. Jimmy grew up in Lawton and graduated from Lawton High School in 1956. He continued his education at Cameron State Agricultural College and later earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in teaching from Southwestern Oklahoma State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma.
On August 11, 1962, Jim married Glenda Marie Doan at First United Methodist Church in Lawton. They shared many wonderful years together before her passing on May 9, 2024.
Jimmy was an avid sports fan his entire life. While he and his wife shared a strong love for OU football, he was also quite the athlete himself. In his youth, he set the state record for the high school boys cross country medley relay-a record that was upheld for decades. He played college tennis and went on to coach several sports during his time as an educator.
Jim dedicated his career to education. He began teaching and coaching girls' basketball in Elk City before moving to Apache, where he served as school principal and coached several sports. He later became the Comanche County Independent School Superintendent. In addition to his work in education, he was employed for several years with Sexton School Supply. Jimmy's proudest teaching moments, however, came after his retirement. Whether it was troubleshooting cars and clocks with his sons, teaching his grandchildren how to ride bikes and bake pies, or introducing his great grandchildren to puzzles and boardgames, Jim had many talents and was eager to share them all.
Jim was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Lawton and heavily involved in UMM. While living in Apache, he was active in the Jaycees and the Lions Club, and he played a key role in founding the Apache Rattlesnake Festival. He was also a member of the Lawton Little Birds Club and traveled often with his wife and friends in their bright red 1956 Thunderbird.
He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Steve and Katherine Stanton, Houston, Texas, and J.R. and Angela Stanton, Cache, Oklahoma; eight grandchildren, Kirsta Bowles and husband Hunter, Kenna Melton and husband Sam, Hannalore McCoy and husband Eamonn, Parker Stanton, Chandler Stanton, Sabrina Stanton, Sophia Stanton and Steven Stanton; three great grandchildren, Kennedy Bowles, Vivienne Melton and Harvey Melton; and his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Don Banwart.
His parents, a brother, Billy Stanton, and a sister, Beverly Hasenbeck, preceded him in death.
