Obituary

Irene Janell Spencer was born on June 19, 1933 in Walters, Oklahoma.  Her proud parents were Chester Reuben and Uda Irene Phillips.

On September 21, 2024, at the age of 91, she entered into the presence of her Lord & Savior.

Janell grew up around the small town of Walters, Oklahoma.  She was the oldest of three children.  In 1950, she graduated from Walters High School and, on September 1 of that year, Janell married Darel Spencer and God blessed them with over 54 years of marriage.  To their union, two daughters, Kathy and Sharon, were born.

Early in their marriage, while Darel was serving our country in Germany, Janell worked at Security National Bank in Lawton.  She also worked for 10 years at Cloth World.

No greater compliment can be given a lady than that her husband and her children all "rise up and call her blessed" (Proverbs Chapter 31).  Janell was an example of what a Christian wife and mother should be and, for the majority of her life, she served her family as a homemaker.  At Calvary Baptist Church, Janell enjoyed teaching Sunday School to 5-year olds, and also worked in many other women's church programs.  Known as a prayer warrior, Janell often shared her faith with those around her.

Her interests included gardening (especially African Violets), sewing for her family, crocheting, painting and baking.

The family expresses their deep appreciation to the wonderful team of servants at Brookridge Retirement Community (Lawton) for their loving and constant care for Janell.  She lived there for over 10 years and considered Brookridge as her "home".

Janell was preceded in death by both of her parents, and by her husband, Darel, who died on May 30, 2005.

She is survived today by her two daughters: Kathy Baggett and her husband, Mike, of Rowlett, TX, and Sharon Thompson, of Edmond, OK.  Also, she is survived by her three grandchildren, Christy Bilbrey (husband, Ronnie), Rachel Ross (husband, Jiles) and Bryan Baggett (wife, Kacy), 4 great grandchildren (Dylan, Bruce, Brooke and Jensen), brothers Chester Phillips (wife, Linda), Jerry Phillips (wife, Carla), many nieces and nephews and many wonderful friends.

The family will remember and celebrate her life at Calvary Baptist Church (Lawton, OK) on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at 10:30am.

Entombment will follow in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

Family will greet friends on Wednesday September 25, 2024 from 5:00pm – 7:00pm at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, please make any memorial gifts to Calvary Baptist Church, 715 SW H Avenue, Lawton, OK 73501, where Janell and Darel served the Lord together for many years.
