Mr. Vineyard died Friday, March 6, 2015, at his home in Lawton. Burial with military honors and Masonic rites will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. James Lee Vineyard was born to Jesse Bailey Vineyard and H.C. Vineyard, Sr. on January 28, 1932 in Cushing, OK and passed away March 6, 2015 in his home in Lawton, OK. He was 83 years old. Jimmy, as he was known in his youth, started his life journey in the small Oklahoma town of Cushing where he was a member of the Cushing High School band for six years. It was during his junior year in high school when he met the love of his life, Georgann Levite, at the Enid Tri State Band Festival. Their love story spanned over 65 years. After graduating from Cushing High School in 1950, life took Jim to the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and an active member of ROTC. Jim was a member of The Pride of Oklahoma where he sat first chair as a cornet player for two years. He also served two years in the Army Color Guard. He graduated from OU in January of 1955 with a Bachelor's degree in Business. The journey continued when Jim and Georgann married on September 5, 1954. They celebrated their 60th anniversary this past September. After graduation, Jim's journey took him into the United States Army as a lieutenant. He was stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX. He worked for Artillery Board 4 in research and development of rockets at White Sands, NM proving grounds. His unit, the 550 Artillery Battery, fired the first Honest John Rocket in battery formation. They also fired the 100th Honest John Rocket. Jim served on active duty from 1955-1957 and continued service for 7 years in the Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged as a captain in 1964. The next step in his journey took Jim and Georgann back to Lawton, OK. Jim went into the insurance field where as an insurance agent, he sold the first health insurance policy for the City of Lawton. After two years, he joined the sales team at Sears, Roebuck, & Company where he worked for six years. He was then hired at Security Bank & Trust where he started as a teller and worked his way to Vice President. During his time at the bank, Security installed the first ATM in Lawton under Jim's supervision. It was located at 4400 Cache Rd. He retired from baking in 1995 after 28 years. Along the journey, Jim was a member of the Lawton Breakfast Optimist Club for over 50 years. During this time, he served as Zone Lieutenant and as Governor of Oklahoma District in 1976. He was also a proud member of the Masons for over 50 years. Jim and his family attended Centenary Methodist Church where Jim served as the treasurer on the finance committee. His retirement allowed him to spend the last 20 years of his life enjoying the things he loved the most. This included traveling with his beautiful wife, watching horse racing, enjoying Oklahoma sports, and spending time with his family. He had a full and wonderful life journey and will be deeply missed. Jim is survived by his wife, Georgann, of the home, and his three daughters, Vicky Robinson and her husband, Chuck of Edmond, Cheri Abshere and her husband, Chuck of Lawton, Cindy Rhoades and her husband, David of Broken Arrow; grandchildren, Joe Abshere and his wife Ostyn, Jenny Sheperd and her husband Grant, Stephanie Gibson and her husband Doug, Brett Rhoades, Bayley Rhoades, Chad Robinson and his wife Holly, Colby Robinson and his wife Emily, Conner Robinson and his wife Becky, and Teyon Ware and his wife Shea; great-grandchildren, Anistyn and Ace Abshere, Ava and Luke Sheperd, Chloe and Gabby Gibson, Mackaylee and Cademon Robinson, and Charlie Robinson; sister-in-law, Molly Levite Griffis of Norman; niece, Ginger Griffis, and nephew, George Griffis, his wife Katka, and their son William, nieces, Anita Achtenberg and Diane Abbrecht.
