James Edward Conway, 82, Lawton passed from this earth on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at his home, doing one of his favorite things, tinkering on his latest project.  James was born January 26, 1934 at his family's farm between Elgin and Sterling.  He was the 6th of 8 children born to Andrew Joseph and Rosa Mary (Fehring) Conway.  He attended school at Our Lady of Perpetual Hope in Sterling, graduating from high school in 1952.  As a boy growing up on the farm, he and his siblings had many daily chores which later grew into several amusing stories he loved to tell his sons and grandchildren.  Some of the stories he told involved a Model A he owned.  James married Anna Louise Altebaumer of Pilot Point, TX on September 14, 1953.  To their union three sons were born.  James and Anna celebrated 52 years of marriage before her passing May 29, 2006.  Jim retired from Public Service Company in 1994 after 42 years of service.  He held many positions with the company; meter reader, collections, customer service, culminating as a regional dispatcher.  He loved horses and introduced first his children, then the grandchildren to the pleasure of horseback riding.  Many, many weekends were spent hauling grandchildren and horses to playdays and playday finals.  At the time of his death, he was a lifetime member of the Grand National Horseman Association (GNHA).  In July of this year at the age of 82, he was the oldest participant at this years GNHA Playday finals.  Just last week, he participated in GNHA's Fall Hand Games event.  James loved attending auctions.  He especially loved buying old pieces of farm equipment, trailers, etc, and re-working them into useable pieces of machinery again.  His granddaughter remembers the first auction she attended with him; he told her "don't scratch your nose, rub your ear, or even move, because you'll own that horse".

He is survived by his three sons, Daniel and Jeannie, Leroy and Zari and Mark, all of Lawton, four grandchildren, Christopher and Kelli Conway of Lindsay, OK, Aaron and Sarah Conway of San Antonio, TX, Phillip and Kandi Conway of Yukon, OK, Courtney and Joshua Sullivan of Lawton, seven great – grandchildren, Madelyn, Brady, Baylee, Bridget, Cora, Abilene and Jentry, two sisters, Rosa Mary and Gary Connor, Margaret Cotten and his brother Joe and Thelma Conway.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother Raymond Conway and three sisters, Mary Lou Brown, Helen Landoll and Barbara Rodiger.
