Age 86, Lawton - Private family service will be at Post Cemetery, Fort Sill. Mrs. Johnson died Friday at a local hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Mrs. Johnson was born on November 21, 1924 in Lawton to John H. and Ida M. (Wells) Moore, granddaughter of Tom and Callie Wells (well known early Indian Nation pioneers who participated in the Oklahoma land lottery). Her happiest memories were of her days running through the fields "out home" on her grandparents farm on the West edge of the wildlife refuge. Mrs. Johnson graduated from Lawton Douglass High School in 1942 as the valedictorian. During World War II she relocated to Vancouver, Washington where she proudly served in a naval shipyard as a civilian worker. She surpassed the position women held as "Rosie the Riveter" and concluded the war as an accomplished welder before returning to Oklahoma. In 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, James C. Johnson, Jr. on October 31, 1947 in Oakland, California. Three children were born to this union. Mrs. Johnson became a military wife, and as a young mother found raising three young ones a challenging responsibility. She devoted her life to her family, raising her children and sharing hands of love with her grandchildren. She was a consummate homemaker and cook, and avid reader and animal lover. She leaves to mourn her husband of 64 years; three children, Linda Burton of New York, Carolle Johnson of Lawton and James C. Johnson III. of Cache; six grandchildren, Tiffany Anne Burton, James Burton III, Elisa Carolle Burton, Mark Christopher Palmer, SGT Matthew Aaron Palmer and James C. Marrero Johnson; loving in laws, Albert and Jo Johnson, Sr., Elliot and Lucille Boutte, Emmett and Nedra Johnson, Sr., Ted Johnson, Dr. Santalynda Marrero, Albert and Tammie Johnson, Jr., Dorothy Ginn and family of Bakersfield, California, Patty and Andrew Young of Bakersfield, Carl T. and Linda Wells of Oklahoma City; and many cousins and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawton Public Library, 110 SW 4th St., Lawton, OK 73501; or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 424 East 92nd St., New York, New York, 10128-6804.
