Private family graveside service for Iris Hurdle Taggart will be held under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.
Iris Hurdle Taggart, 90, Lawton passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the Brentwood Senior Living Community in Lawton, Oklahoma. She was born July 11, 1930 in Belvidere, North Carolina to William S. and Mary E. Hurdle. She grew up in Belvidere and Windfall, North Carolina, along with her sisters and brother, Dora Mae, Virginia (Willie), Ruth, and Chester. After graduating high school, Iris attended Shaw College then later moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she lived with her sisters. She worked in several occupations, including operating a comptometer in the business office of Abraham & Strauss Department Store. While living in Brooklyn, she was introduced to James (Jimmy) Robert Taggart. They would eventually marry in February of 1953. They had two daughters, Pamela and Mary. Their Union lasted 58 years until Jimmy's death in 2011. After her marriage, Iris focused on being a full time Army wife. Jimmy's 30 year career took the family to duty stations across the country and overseas. She was a devoted wife and mother. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed taking recipes and making them better. Iris was known in the neighborhood for her plant filled yard. To say she had a green thumb would be an understatement. Like all plant people she was always willing to share a plant clipping with other plant lovers. She volunteered with a variety of activities, including Girl Scouts, Band Boosters, NCO Wives Club, Thrift Shop Volunteers, Killeen ISD Advisory Council, and the Killeen ISD PTA Council. As her husband rose in rank, she became very active in family support activities, at the battery, battalion, and finally the division level. After retirement she and Jimmy moved to Norfolk, Virginia where she focused on being a doting grandparent and helping to take care of her parents. She also became a small business owner, operating a booth at The Big Top Flea Market. She later moved to Lawton where she lived with her daughter's family. Last year she moved to Ten Oaks Place (Memory Care). Recently she moved to The Brentwood Senior Living Community.
Iris is survived by her daughters, Pamela and Mary (David), her grandchildren, Nicole (Brandon), Kelly (Raven), Justin (Daniella), Khristopher (Regina), and Iris (George), seven great grandchildren, two sisters, Ruth and Willie, five nieces and nephews, Monette, Violet, Linette, David, Chester, Jr. (Dell), and a great-niece and great-nephew, Ashley, Logan and Justin.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy, her parents, William and Mary Hurdle, her sister and brother, Dora Mae and Chester Hurdle, her son-in-law, Alfonso Benskin and her brother-in-law, Alphonso Smith.
