Homer was born on January 22, 1932, east of Lawton, Oklahoma, to H.E. "Chink" Coody and Brooksie Wilson Coody. He was the sixth of ten children born to the family. Homer graduated from Elgin High School in 1950 and, on September 2 of that same year, married his high school sweetheart, Thelma May Watson, in Lawton. Together they built a beautiful life and shared over 75 years of marriage, spending most of their years in rural Elgin where they raised their family and cultivated deep roots in their community.
In November 1952, Homer was drafted into the United States Army. He served with the 803rd Engineers in England, helping repair airfields that had been damaged during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in October 1954 and returned home to continue his civil service career at Fort Sill.
Homer dedicated 26 years of service to the Fort Sill Fire Department where he worked his way through the ranks and retired in February 1982 as Acting Fire Chief. In addition to his public service, Homer was a lifelong farmer and rancher. He took great pride in working the land, raising cattle, and building his own herd. Homer's greatest joys were found in his faith, his family, and his community. He loved Jesus, cherished his church family, and faithfully loved those around him. As a young man, Homer was active in FFA, developing a lifelong appreciation for agriculture and rural life.
A talented baseball and fast-pitch softball player, he carried his love of sports throughout his life. Homer could always be found in the stands attending ballgames, livestock shows, school activities, and community events, enthusiastically cheering on those he loved. He proudly supported his daughters in their sporting events and FFA activities and later became the biggest supporter of every generation that followed.
Known for his generous heart, Homer shared the fruits of his labor with friends and neighbors, often delivering homegrown produce from his garden. He was everyone's biggest fan, always offering encouragement, love, and a smile. Strong, dependable, and kind, Homer had a unique gift for making each person feel valued and important.
Homer is survived by his beloved wife of the home; four daughters, Debbie (Dennis) Klugh of Fort Cobb, Connie Grigsby of Dunwoody, Georgia, Beverly (Mark) Mattingly of Elgin, and Anita (Phil) Kennedy of Lawton. He was PawPaw to 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, with another on the way, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Homer loved deeply and was deeply loved in return. The legacy he leaves behind is one of strength, integrity, generosity, and unconditional love. His influence will continue to be felt for generations through the family he adored, the faith he modeled, and the countless lives he touched.
Though he will be greatly missed, his family finds deep comfort knowing he is with Jesus. His sparkling blue eyes and his hallmark smile are even brighter in heaven!
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Apache First United Methodist Church, a church family that meant so much to Homer!
