Funeral service for Herbert D. "Bob" Herrin, Jr. 74, Dallas, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Becker Funeral Home of Fletcher Chapel with Rev. Jim Hall, Pastor, Fletcher Christian Church officiating. Mr. Herrin died December 5 in hospice care of lung cancer at CC Young Memorial Home in Dallas surrounded by new and old friends and his family. Burial will be in the Fletcher Cemetery under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Fletcher. Mr. Herrin was born December 22, 1936 at Fletcher, Oklahoma, the loving son to Mary McCabe Herrin and the late Rooster Herrin. Herbert became Bob because his older brother couldn't say baby; it came out Bobby and Bobby stuck. By many he led an unconventional life. He loved to travel and went to places many of us only dream of. He had many short and long term romances which were ultimately aborted probably because of his bipolar illness. He loved working with his hands and applied that passion to becoming a master plumber and worked for the Southland Building in Dallas and later started his own plumbing business Bob loved thinking men's games such as bridge and chess and won local tournaments in bridge. His love of dancing and his disarming ways could make him the life of the party. Many would have been surprised to learn that he had a love for classical music. When his days became numbered, his generosity kicked into gear and he made sure that whatever he had of value could be given to those in need. He was a devoted son and called his mother every morning to wish her a great day. Of course that call made it a great day. His sister was in awe of him because of his struggles with his bipolar and his continued passion for life even with his ups and downs. Of course, she couldn't forget the fact that he bought her first lipstick. Others grew to admire him in the last stages of his life. He will be missed but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him. Left to cherish his memory is his mother, Mary L. Herrin, Dallas, Texas, and his sister, Marilyn L. Herrin, Mesquite, Texas. His father, Herbert "Rooster" Herrin and a brother Charles Herrin, preceded him in death. The family will greet friends from 2-4 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
