Obituary

Funeral service for Harvey Gean Jenkins, 88, Lawton will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 21, 2015 at Bible Baptist Church, Lawton with Dr. Bob Weger, Pastor officiating. Mr. Jenkins passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 in Lawton. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. He was born August 29, 1926 in Advance, MO to Martin Luther and Jewell (Richmond) Jenkins. He was the grandson of Nealy Stroup Richmond and James Leamon Richmond. In 1943, after being promised to be kept stateside, his grandmother signed papers so he could join the Navy at age 17. Immediately following basic training he was shipped overseas on the USS Colorado Battleship to fight in Naval Battles of the Asiatic Pacific: Philippine Liberation. Following his time in the US Navy, he worked for the State Highway Department of Missouri and then the Granite Bituminous Construction Co. building roads all over the state of Missouri. He and Dorothy June Monroe married in 1949, and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary October 8, 2014. In 1960 a childhood friend asked him to move from St. Louis to Altus, Oklahoma and be the foreman for his new asphalt paving company, so Harvey moved his family to Oklahoma. Within three years he began his own asphalt paving and dirt excavation company, H & J Construction Company. In 1996 after 36 years in business he turned the reigns over to his son Jim and retired at the age of 70. After three years of retirement and the quiet life, he began missing the challenges of working and running a business. This time he started his new business on the Red River, Jenkins Sand Company personally overseeing it until the summer of 2014. The workday started best with breakfast at the coffee shop and ended there with coffee and the "boys". Harvey loved sports whether watching his son play football for many different Lawton teams or the St. Louis Cardinals baseball games on television. He loved automobiles in all shapes and sizes, but his love for family and following their activities and interests gave him the greatest joy. Always a man of his word and though known as a hard taskmaster, he never expected more from anyone else than himself. He was generous with friends, family and those he employed. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, son James Harvey "Jim" Jenkins and wife Sharon of Lawton, daughter Jennifer Jenkins Weber and husband Mark Weber of Tulsa, OK, grandsons: Ryan Jenkins and wife Hayley of Elgin, OK, John Weber and wife Ann of Tulsa, OK, Ben Weber and wife Natalie of Tulsa, OK, grandson Brent Jenkins and his wife Adrian, Lawton, granddaughter Melissa Jenkins and Fiancee' Scott Conry of Lawton, nine great grandchildren: Jordyn Jenkins, Brody Weber, Gracyn Weber, Matthew Gean Weber, Avery Jenkins, Harvey Weber, Jack Weber, Crews Jenkins, Owen Jenkins, a half-brother Jerry Pickens and two half-sisters Charlotte Pickens Simpkins and Karen Pickens Lloyd. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Betty LaCroix and his youngest daughter Julie Ann Jenkins.
