In WW II he was trained as an Air Force pilot from 1940 to 1944 and was captured by the British and was a POW until the end of the war. Guenter immigrated to the United States in 1949, and was sponsored by his mother's sister and husband to come to Wisconsin. He lived with them for a while and worked in his trade at the Milwaukee Gear Company for 3 years. Guenter's love of flying made him study hard in night classes so he could get his pilots license in English. After that he bought his first car. In the 1950's he bought a mobile home and lived at the airport in Wagner, SD where he worked as an air-taxi-pilot and crop duster. He also worked as a sprayer in Sioux City, IA, Platte, SD, Alva, OK and Snyder, OK. Guenter went back to Germany in 1957 to visit his parents and other relatives. That was when he met Gisela Bunzel and her family. They corresponded for 2 years, faithfully writing letters back and forth to wherever he was working at the time. On February 21, 1959 they got married in the Lutheran Church in Berlin and he brought his new bride to the United States to settle in Snyder, OK. They came with their mobile home in tow from the North and when she asked him "How much further is it "? He answered "In those mountains there" pointing to the Wichita's. "I like it already" she replied. They started a business that same year, the Snyder Spraying Service. Guenter trained his wife as a flagman for the spray plane and as a contact person on the ground between the farmer and the pilot. Gisela had to learn the English language fast. On St. Patrick's Day 1960 they became the proud parents of twin boys, Gerald and Gregory. If someone asked him why twins, he would reply "We need two flagmen, one on each side of the field". On their next trip to Germany they took the boys to have them meet their grandparents and other relatives. The boy's where christened by the same minister that performed their wedding ceremony. The Schulz four lived content for 10 years in a mobile home which Gisela called her "Dollhouse". Mr. Schulz bought land West of Snyder, put in an asphalt landing strip and erected a double hangar with an office in-between.
