He was the fourth of eleven children. He entered the armed forces in 1943, with the 81st Division of the US Army, and spent four years as a marksman and rifleman in the South Pacific Islands. He participated in the Angaur and Peleliu Island campaigns, the Philippine Island Campaign and the occupation of Japan. Prior to his shipping out overseas, he married Dorothy Mae Gresham on December 23, 1943 at her parent's home west of Mountain Park, OK. Part of the "Greatest Generation", in later years he agreed with historians that the war in the South Pacific was the forgotten part of WW II, and where some of the most vicious and deadly battles of the war were fought. Glen B. spoke in later life of the fact that in the Pacific, there was no rear or place for retreat. You either moved forward or you were pushed into the ocean to die. His division was in the Philippines preparing for the invasion of mainland Japan when the word came that the A-Bombs had been dropped. A history book of the 81st comprised after the war, showed battle plans for the 321st Regiment, to which Glen B. was assigned. It estimated that no member of that invading force would survive until the fifth wave reached land. Glen B. would have been in the third wave. He was discharged in 1946 as a Staff Sergeant, and returned to Western Oklahoma to farm northeast of Snyder. In 1953, during a drought period, he worked on a carpentry crew remodeling barracks buildings at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In 1954 he began a civil service career at Fort Sill with the school supply warehouse which lasted some thirty years. He was awarded Civil Service Employee of the Year for Fort Sill twice during his career. He continued farming with his son for a number of years, starting a small registered Angus herd that was his pride and joy in retirement. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Snyder Farmers CO-OP in the 1960's, serving as board member and secretary for more than twenty five years. He continued farming until age 85. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy Mae Starcher of Duncan, OK, daughter Janell Rochell and husband Dale of Duncan, OK, son Glen Burton Starcher, Jr. and wife Louise of Amarillo, TX. He was also blessed with six grandchildren: Lori Starcher Brown and husband Donnie of Plainview, TX, Holli Starcher Mitchell and husband Brian of Lubbock, TX, Amee Harthun Matthews and husband John of Lockhart, TX, Aaron Harthun of Duncan, OK, Evan Sellers and wife Mandie of Ada, OK, and Morgan Sellers of Beaumont, TX. He also has eleven great-grandchildren: Joshua, Hannah, Mariza, MaKayla, Joseph, Johnathan, Devan, Kinley, Noelle, Lauren and Kambree, a brother Donald Starcher of Patterson, CA, sisters Mozelle Orr of Wilmington, NC, Gaye King and husband Charles of Hale Center, TX, June Autry and husband Gene of Waxahachie, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers; William, Clyde, Earl and Johnny and two sisters: Jessie and Lila and a sister-in-law, Rosemarie.
