Funeral service for Geneva Aline Anderson Newby, 92, former Lawton resident will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Lawton Heights United Methodist Church with Retired Chaplain (COL) Jack N. Anderson of Frederick, Maryland and Rev. Michelle D. McCarty, Pastor, officiating. Mrs. Newby died Friday in a Tulsa hospital. Burial will be in the Letitia Cemetery, east of Lawton, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Geneva was born December 5, 1919 in Union City, Oklahoma to Jesse G. and Odessa (Garrett) Anderson and was very proud to be a preacher's daughter and serve several communities in Oklahoma with her parents. She graduated from Sterling High School in 1938. While in high school, Geneva and her sister Elizabeth were Oklahoma State Tennis Pairs Champions. She graduated from Cameron College in 1940 and went on to graduate from the Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha in 1942. Geneva taught English and Typing at Chattanooga and Indiahoma before marrying her high school sweetheart, Jesse Ray Newby, on June 6, 1943. She was a dedicated homemaker and very happy to be a fireman's wife. They were married 67 years before Jess passed away May 1, 2010. Geneva was a beloved wife and mother and adored by her children and grandchildren. "Gammie's" dry sense of humor was also enjoyed by her great grandchildren. They nicknamed her "the funniest Grandmother ever, and she doesn't even know it". Her family was extremely important to her. She rarely missed a football game, baseball game, wrestling match, musical, or dance recital. She was her children's and grandchildren's biggest supporter. And while always mild mannered and kind, we could always hear her cheering us on over everyone else. She loved unconditionally. She is survived by her children, Jess Richard Newby, Walnut Cove, North Carolina, Aline Newby Dillahunty and son in law Jimmy G. Dillahunty of Tulsa, Oklahoma, John Dean Newby and daughter in law Pam Rhoads Newby of Oklahoma City and Tommy Dale Newby of Oklahoma City; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Her parents, one brother, two sisters and a daughter in law, Cindy A. Newby, preceded her in death. The family will greet friends from 6-8 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.
