Funeral service for Gene Brown, 77, Lawton, will be 10:00 a.m. Friday in the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Curtis Newton officiating. Mr. Brown died Tuesday, September 6, at his residence. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. He was born September 28, 1933 in Texico, New Mexico, to Mike and Beulah Brown. He grew up and attended school in Pleasant Hill, New Mexico. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from August 20, 1953 until his discharge on March 17, 1955 and served an additional six years with the U.S. Army Reserves. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He married Avanell Jones on February 24, 1956 in Clovis, New Mexico. He had worked for Wirt Holsinger's service station and later owned and operated Brown's DX Station. In 1972 h e purchased Lawton Auto Parts and worked there until his retirement in 1996. He was a fan of car racing. He is survived by his wife, of the home; a son and daughter in law, Charlie and Kathy Brown, Lawton; a daughter and son in law, Donna and Harold Thorne, Geronimo; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Christy Belflower, Gina Wallace, Kim and Brian Davis, Michael and Lindsey Brown, Mandi and Jeremy Dunn, Melissa and Jeremy Stovall, Justin and Lauren Thorne, Jason Thorne and Jacob Thorne; 14 Great Grandchildren; a sister and brother in law, Ella Mae and Randy Ridgeway, Presidio, Texas. His parents, a step mother, Beatrice, a brother, Robert, a sister, Margie Ruth Lahue, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Brown, preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leah Fitch Cancer Center of Southwest Oklahoma, 104 NW 34th Street, Lawton OK 73505. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Thursday at the funeral home.
