Franklin "Frank" Johnston Jr., 92, of Elgin, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully at home on December 3, 2025. Born in Dallas, Texas, Frank was the son of Franklin L. Johnston and Jewel A.E. Alexander. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a steady sense of responsibility that stayed with him throughout his life.
In his early years, Frank worked as a lineman for Dallas Power & Light Company. At the age of 25, he was drafted into the United States Army as a field artillery soldier. He went on to serve for 20 years in locations including Vietnam, Thailand, France, and Hawaii. He completed his military career at Fort Sill and chose to settle in Lawton, Oklahoma. After retiring from the Army as a Major, Frank continued serving his community by working in civil service for another 18 years.
Frank met the love of his life, Donna, at a square dance in 1985. They married in 1986 and shared a devoted 40-year marriage, blending their families and building a life filled with faith, adventure, and devotion. The couple enjoyed traveling across the country in their motor home, exploring new places and making memories together. They later moved to Forestburg, Texas, where they spent 20 years enjoying their retirement before eventually returning to Oklahoma. Frank was a faithful member of the Sullivan Village Church of Christ, and together with Donna, they were active in church activities and ministries.
A true jack of all trades, Frank enjoyed boating, skiing, traveling, motorcycling, camping, running marathons, spending time in his workshop, and being with the people he loved most. He had a natural talent for mechanics and could often be found tinkering with engines and equipment. He was known for his steady kindness, practical wisdom, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen M. Johnston; his sons Franklin L. "Skip" Johnston, Robin Johnston, who is survived by his wife Nancy, and Christopher Slaughter; as well as his four siblings.
Frank is survived by his wife, Donna Christine Johnston; and his children, Kathleen Swan, Shannon Wallace, Dina Slaughter, and Jeffrey Slaughter. His grandchildren include Aubrey Cates, Shawna Shircliff, Taylor Powell Keating, Zane Johnston, and JD Swan. He leaves behind his great-grandchildren Connor Powell, Preston Powell, Olivia Johnston, and Hazel Johnston. He is also remembered by many other beloved family members and friends whose love and support meant so much.
Frank's life was marked by his unwavering faith and his commitment to sharing God's love. He dedicated himself to guiding others toward a Christian life, encouraging, mentoring, and helping many come to know the Lord. His legacy of faith, service, and spiritual leadership will continue to inspire all who knew him.
