Age 90, Snyder - Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Saturday in the First United Methodist Church, Snyder with Rev. Jack Atkinson, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Elk City officiating. Mrs. Joyce died Sunday at her home. Burial will be at 11:00 am Monday, December 14, 2009 in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Snyder. She was born March 22, 1919 in Texarkana, TX to Erick Sven and Signe Elise Nordstrom. She was the eldest child, having a younger sister, Arline. Evelyn graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936 and attended the University of Oklahoma as an Art Major, and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She also studied at the Chicago Art Institute. On December 29, 1946 she married Army Officer John Thomas Joyce of Denver, Colorado. To this union, two children were adopted, Gigi Evelyn and John Michael. Evelyn worked in the family business, Roosevelt Granite Company, and was President for over 35 years. Her life was spent on the Nordstrom Homestead, except for twenty years in which they lived in Dallas. While there she took private oil-painting classes and was a member of the Dallas Art Museum and Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and made several trips to Europe, Asia, China, Tibet and Scandinavia. Upon the adoption of their Chinese granddaughter AliMarie Joyce, they moved back to their dream home. Evelyn's last years were dedicated to her family and friends as a messenger of God's love. She will always be remembered for strength, caring and love as a hostess to others. She is survived by her daughter Gigi Joyce Smith and daughter AliMarie Joyce Smith of Elk City, OK, one sister Arline Nordstrom Speck of Snyder, OK, brother and sister-in-law Robert (Bob) and Marion Bertrum Joyce of Houston, TX, nieces, Mary Lawrence of Denver, CO, Signe Speck Thurston and husband Theodore of Austin, TX, Michaela Joyce Keller and husband Mark of San Antonio, TX, Terry Joyce Hale and husband, Price of Grand Prairie, TX, Nora Joyce Henderson and husband Marshall of Washington D.C., nephews Erick Speck of Grapevine, TX, Daniel Joyce and wife Deborah of Singapore, Joseph Joyce and wife Kate of Houston, TX, three step-grandchildren, Lacy Smith Hagerman, Ryan Smith and wife Christy and Tyler Smith and wife Rebecca all of Elk City, OK. She is also blessed with special caregivers, Mary Duarte, Almonza Glasscock, Francis Villa, Adela Villegas and Brenda Theyel. Also many friends and family in America as well as Sweden. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erick and Signe Nordstrom, beloved husband " Shug " of 62 years, John Thomas (Jack) Joyce, a son John Michael Joyce and son-in-law Rob Smith.
