Obituary

Funeral services for Ethel Jean (White) Weddington, 83, Lawton, will be 10:00 am Wednesday in the Becker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Rev. Mark J. Henslee, Pastor, Westminster Presbyterian Church, officiating. Mrs. Weddington died Saturday in a local care facility. Burial will be in Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home & Cremation Service. She was born June 23, 1927 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to Wilbur and Elizabeth Jane (Davies) White. She attended school at Fond du Lac and graduated from Fond du Lac High School on June 8, 1945. After graduating from high school she moved to Chicago, Illinois where she worked as a clerk for a department store and remained there until May 8, 1946 when she married Charles R. Weddington, a member of the United States Army (their Christian marriage on December 21, 1947 in St. Boniface Rectory by Fr. Charles B. Miller). Shortly after marriage she moved to Peoria, Illinois where she remained until August 1949 when she moved to Fort Ord, California to join her husband after his return from assignments in Korea and Alaska. After high school her biggest dream was to become a flight attendant so she could travel, a dream that was partially fulfilled when she accompanied her husband to his duty assignments in Lentz, Austria; Fort Knox, Kentucky; Friedberg, Germany; Fort Ord, California; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Sill, Oklahoma and during a visit to her daughter Cheryl Nunez while her husband was stationed in Germany. During this visit she had the opportunity to travel to Holland, Luxemburg, Belgium and many cities in Germany. While at Fort Sill, Oklahoma Mrs. Weddington attended the Nurses Assistant course and was employed by Southwestern Medical Center as a nurse' aide and worked there from November 1961 until July 1965. In August 1965 she started working for Civil Service at Fort Sill with Reynolds Army Community Hospital as a Nurse Assistant and remained in that position until her retirement in July 1987 after more than 21 years of service. Her devotion to duty and her love for helping others led to numerous Army awards while working at Reynolds Army Community Hospital. After retirement she remained in Lawton and got involved in many community activities. She was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lawton and remained a member of the church until she became too ill to attend church services. After retirement she volunteered her time to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Mother's Day Out program. Her assistance in the development of good child care procedures was instrumental to the success of the program. When she became too ill to perform normal chores she was cared for by her daughter Cheryl L. Nunez and her grandchildren, Jessica R.W. Nunez, Nadia Nunez and Natalie M. Nunez. The scope of the care was extended to her husband Charles R. Weddington when he became too disabled to care for his wife.
