Edgar P. "Ed" Sneed, 85, of Elgin, Oklahoma passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2021, at his home in Elgin. He was born April 11, 1936 in Iredell, Texas to Walter James and Gladys Mae (Smith) Sneed. He married his wife of 47 years, Michelle Paras, on November 4, 1974 in Conroe, Texas. Ed and Michelle have one son, Edgar Pike Sneed, II.
Ed was a simple country man, raised at a time when times were difficult. His father died when he was 12 years old and Ed took on many responsibilities to help his mother care for his siblings. He had a paper route and did what he could to help support the family. At the age of 16 Ed picked cotton and saved enough money to buy a Buick. He loved that car very much. By the time Ed was 17 years old he wanted to join the Army but his mother would not sign for him and told him to figure out another way. He did by getting his brother-in-law to sign for him and the two of them made a pact that Ed's mother was not to know of the signing. Ed was stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Bliss and served in Korea followed by a tour in Japan. He reenlisted and served a total of eight years in the Army. He was very proud of his service to his country and also earned his GED while serving in the Army.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, Ed began working for the Katy Railroad followed by the Union Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad after 43 years of service. Ed was well liked and loved by so many. He was a very humble man never asking for much from life but to be all he could be for his Lord, country, and family. He and Michelle traveled the United States from one coast to the other. Every year the family went camping, fishing, and hunting. Every Saturday night the couple went dancing at the Conroe Ball Room with her parents at the original Mickey Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas and the VFW in Lawton, Oklahoma. The VFW was Ed's favorite place to dance to good old country music.
Ed was baptized at the age of 12 and he was a member of Hilltop Family Church since 1992 and served as a greeter and worked with the children and the youth. He loved children and enjoyed being able to help where he was needed.
Ed was such a loving dad to his son, and they were more than a dad and son but best friends. He loved his grandchildren so much and he was a joker too, loved to laugh, and have a good time with family and friends. Ed loved Michelle very much and took very good care of her and allowed her to be her. He would always say, "A marriage can last as long as ours if you let your wife win all of the time." Ed made all of Michelle's dreams come true.
Ed will watch over his family now and the family will have many years of beautiful memories to hold onto in their hearts and mind forever until they meet again.
Ed is survived by his wife of the home, son, grandchildren, Evan Dru Sneed, Madison Freeman, and Amber Freeman and her husband Mike, brother-in-law, James Hutchinson and wife Carolyn, brother-in-law, Richard Ferreira, sister-in-law, Jackie Sylvia and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by parents, daughter, Janice Sneed Van Houten, sisters, Lois "Mini" Holloway and husband Jake, Tommy Cole, and Cassie Lee, brothers, James Sneed and Roy Vaughan Sneed.
