Les Banks, Pastor of the First Baptist Church, Indiahoma, Ok officiating. Gene passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2014 in Alvarado, TX. Burial will be in the Fairlawn Cemetery, Snyder under the direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home of Snyder. Gene was born December 2, 1937 in Pomona, CA, the son of Marshall and Stella (Bussey) Smith. His family lived around the Snyder and Roosevelt area during his school years. He attended Snyder High School where he played numerous sports and was a member of the FFA. He married his high school sweetheart Barbara Blaine, after a courtship starting in the first grade, and lasting until this past Wednesday. He worked for International Harvester for 22 years, living in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma, becoming the International Harvester Dealer in Bryan, TX from 1980-1984. In 1985 he started a successful family business in Houston which he ran for the next 20 years, officially retiring in 2005. Retirement allowed him to work on his golf game and to build new friendships in addition to those he made in the Harvester days all of which lasted the rest of his life. The things that defined Gene are the Oklahoma Sooners, Dallas Cowboys, Rangers games, hunting (this included making sure he had the right gun for every situation or game animal he might encounter), fishing with his Dad Marshall and brother Wayne, morning cups of coffee and everybody knows he spoiled his dogs. He also loved taking his motor home and "camping out" at his cousin Tommy Bussey's barn. This allowed him priceless time spent with the friends he valued so highly. At his home in Colorado, he would go to the CO-OP, buy a couple of bales of alfalfa even though he didn't need them, just to leave in his garage. He called this his "sniffin hay". Even though he left the rural life at a young age, you couldn't take the country out of him and he was proud of that. Gene is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Rani White and husband Scott of Mesa, AZ, sons Gregg Smith and wife Diane of Phoenix, AZ, Grant Smith and wife Jill of Magnolia, TX, four grandchildren, Justin MacDonald and wife Andrea, Cody MacDonald, Marshall Smith and Baylee Smith, three great grandchildren, Caleb, Graham and Kellen MacDonald, sisters-in-law Velma Reser and husband Norman, Jimmie Charlotte Marshall, Rene Smith and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Charles Wayne Smith and a grandson Gregg Smith, Jr. * A memorial service will be held in College Station, TX for Gene at a later date to be determined. *
