Obituary

Age 82, Lawton - Graveside service will be 1:00 PM Thursday in the Highland Cemetery with Chaplain (LTC) Paul Andreasen, Fort Sill, officiating. Mr. Mose died Friday, February 27, 2009 at a local care center. Burial with full military honors will be under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. Mr. Mose was born on December 19, 1926 in Bixby, Oklahoma to Victor Lee and Eunice Nadine (Smith) Mose. He was a longtime resident of Lawton and an Oklahoma native. He grew up during the Depression and was resourceful selling scrap metal and pecans to help feed his brothers and sisters. That resourcefulness came in handy during his time in the Army Air Corps as a skilled helicopter pilot and instructor (and pretty darn good mechanic). He served in World War II, then became an Army helicopter pilot and flew many missions in the Korean and Vietnam Wars, as well as flying President Eisenhower to Mexico. He once performed an entire hospital evacuation in a flooded area. He was awarded numerous military citations and medals, including three Bronze Stars. He had one experience flying in under fire to rescue a downed helicopter, repairing the helicopter, and then flying it out safely. Darrell loved kids, music and was a self taught guitarist who played at several local clubs. After retirement from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer, he restored furniture and ran a local antiques shop. He was a fun-loving guy, liked to play practical jokes, and was always up for a good laugh. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Victor L. Mose and Karen of Stillwater; a granddaughter, Amanda Best and her husband, William, of Piedmont, Oklahoma; two great grandchildren, Deanna and James Best; a stepson, James Guthrie; a sister, Mona Stewart of Wilton, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three daughters, Deborah Lynn Mose, Linda Diane Mose and Constance Mose; a son, Johnny Mose, as well as another young infant; two wives, Juanita Mose in 2003 and Shirley Mose in 1990; a sister, Virginia Cummings; and four brothers, Jimmy, Warren, Roger and David.
