Age 80, Lawton - Graveside service will be 11:00 AM Thursday in the Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin. Mr. Funakura died Saturday in a local hospital. Burial with full military honors will be under the direction of the Becker Funeral Home. He was born on August 9, 1928 in Waimanalo, Hawaii to Kenichi and Alice Haruko Funakura. He married Shizuko Jahana on June 24, 1954 in Okinawa, Japan. He joined the US Army in February 1949 and served in Hawaii, Fort Ord, California, Fort Meade, Maryland, two tours in Germany, Iran, Vietnam, Okinawa, and Fort Sill. He retired from active duty in June 1971. After his retirement, he operated Shizuko's Oriental Restaurant at Doe Doe Park. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Robin and Kenneth Funakura, both of Arlington, Texas; a brother, Thomas Funakura of California; two sisters, Alice Sato and Bernice Fukushima, both of Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews. His parents, a son, Dennis Funakura, and three brothers, Harry, Richard and Fred Funakura, preceded him in death.
