Celebration of Life with military honors for Charles "Charley" Wright will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3, 2026, at The Music Hall in Medicine Park, Oklahoma. There will be a potluck dinner and a jam session after the service like the good ole days. Dress code is whatever you feel most comfortable in. Charley was eclectic in style as he was in life, and he loved a good party!
Charles "Charley" Alfred Wright was born May 22, 1943, to Alfred and Marion Wright in Grenada, Mississippi. When he was one year old the family moved to Plattsburg, New York where his two brothers Richard and Gary were born. At the age of seven the family moved to Lawton-Ft. Sill, Oklahoma where his sister Patty was born. His mother Marion passed away from breast cancer at the age of 42 after battling it for over a year. Charley was only eleven. Being the oldest of the four, he watched after his siblings the best he could. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy and was assigned to the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), an Essex-class aircraft carrier which was heavily involved in the Vietnam War, conducting multiple combat deployments between 1962 and 1970. He was stationed in Alaska and the Philippines and docked in Adak, Guam and Vietnam.
Returning to Lawton from service in 1965 he met and married his first wife Sandra Poahway. Together they had four children, Alfy, Deanna, Penny and Andrea and later divorced in 1979. In 1982 he met Ellen Sue Tolan. They were married July 30, 1983. They had two children, Sarah and Zack. In 1996 they started fixing up a house in Medicine Park where Charley felt at home being the eccentric character we all know and love. He became actively involved in the initial revitalization of the park and with Ellie ran Charley's Angels Shop from 1998-2008. He later opened Santa's Snack Shop in 2010 where he and Ellie enjoyed being close to Medicine
Creek and having a place families could come to eat while they gathered and enjoyed the swimming hole like old times.
The Medicine Park community and anyone whoever met him will never forget his sincerity and vigor for life. He was an artist, an eccentric, a father, husband and a friend. He was our Beloved Duck Man, Santa, Seth the Train Robber, Polar Bear Grand Marshall, crazy eyed Bongo Man. Charley was well known for his annual Halloween and Spring Fling parties and spending Sundays in "church" hiking and picnicking in the Wichita Mountains.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law Debbie Wright and son-in-law Joseph Swingle.
He is survived by his wife Ellie Wright, Brothers, Richard Wright, Gary Wright and wife June and sister- Patty Knight and husband Carl Young. Two sons, Alfred Charles Wright and Zachariah Reid Wright and wife Amber. Two honorary sons, John Chestnut and Steve DeRosa. Four daughters, Deanna Thomas, Penelope Swingle, Andrea Veney and husband Eric and Sarah Wright, Grandchildren: Charles "Chad" Wright and wife Kendra Wright, Brittany Eden and husband Levi, Marion Wright, Christian "Chris" Wright, Veronique Wright, Autumn Swingle,
