Carol Sue (Chapman) Crews was born at the family home at Faught, TX on September 14, 1943, to Leslie and Esma (King) Chapman. She passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2025, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 81.
Carol attended Lone Star School for the first three years until her family moved nearer to Paris, Texas. She completed eighth grade at Fourth Ward Elementary School in Paris. She was a 1961 graduate of Paris High School. In 1962, she went to Dallas to train as an X-Ray technologist at Baylor Hospital. While there, she met the love of her life, Robert L. Crews, III. She completed her training in 1964. She married Robert on February 7, 1964, at Providence Baptist Church in Paris. They made their home in Apache, OK where she worked for Dr. Robert Shore in Lawton as an X-Ray Technician for several years after their marriage. She and her husband had two children, Robert Lee, IV and Jennifer Lynn. She then joined her husband to work alongside him at their family funeral home, Crews Funeral Home.
While her children were young, Carol became active in civic organizations in the community. She was a member of the Jaycee Janes, where she served as president. She was a member of the GFWC Apache Study Club from 1966-present where she held many offices, locally and the Southwest District. She also served in offices at the state level culminating in her becoming GFWC-OK State President from 2012-2014. She also was a Cub Scout Den Mother and a Girl Scout Leader.
Carol was an active member of the Apache First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, helped with Vacation Bible School and was a youth leader for many years. She served as church treasurer from 1980-1992.
She, along with several other women in the community, decided in 1967 that Apache needed a public library. They worked throughout the winter gathering books and preparing them to place in the library located in a small office room in the Clark-Bohart Community Building. The library opened its doors to the public on May 18, 1968, without Carol because she was in the hospital with a newborn baby. She served on the Library Board of Directors for more than 40 years and was instrumental in purchasing the current building for the library and securing internet and computer access for free public use.
Carol became the first female member of the Apache Rotary Club in 1992 after visiting clubs in Southwest Oklahoma with her husband while he was District Governor. She later served as District Governor in 1999-2000. Together, they traveled to several countries representing Apache and Oklahoma at meetings and conventions.
She was also a member of the Apache Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture and was recognized as Woman of the Year in 2012 and named a Town Treasure in 2016. She was also a longtime member of the Stitch-in-Time Sewing Club, Quilting Club and Eastern Star.
After she retired from the funeral home, she worked as a volunteer at Southwestern Hospital in Lawton for ten years. She also volunteered in the Apache Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry since 2001.
When not doing her civic duties, Carol channeled her creativity through a needle. Whether working on a sewing project, crocheting, or doing embroidery, her talent was unmistakable. She was especially gifted in quilting. She created beautiful quilts, lovingly quilted entirely by hand, leaving a legacy for all her family to enjoy.
She is survived by her husband, Robert, of the home; her son and his wife, Rob and Allison Crews of Elk City, Oklahoma, her daughter and her husband, Jennifer and Brent Parmer of Apache; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren-Sean Crews of Kansas City, Missouri, Jason and his wife, Ashton Crews and their children, Karson, Kinadee and Walter of Elk City, Oklahoma, Garrett and his wife, Kaitlyn Parmer and son, Lincoln of Newcastle, Oklahoma, Madyson and her husband, Harlan Mindemann and their daughter, Parker of Apache, and Harmon Parmer of Apache; her brother and his wife, Leslie and Mary Don Chapman of Blossom, Texas, her sister-in-law, Jan Worden of Apache and nine nieces and nephews and their families.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Gary Chapman and George Chapman and her sister, Billie Day.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the Apache Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
