C. Imogene "Gene" Bridges passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, in Lawton, Oklahoma, at the age of 95. She was born south of Lawton on August 29, 1929, to Derris Everett and Cornelia Belle "Neely" Tompkins. Gene grew up in Lawton and graduated from Lawton High School in 1946.
On June 1, 1947, she married Herbert W. Bridges at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. They shared 75 years of marriage before his passing on November 10, 2022. Gene had a 35-year career with Southwestern Bell, now AT&T, beginning as a telephone operator in Wyoming. Her dedication and adaptability led her through a variety of roles including the front collection office, business office supervisor, frame attendant, and ultimately as an estimate assigner. Her work ethic and professionalism left a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike.
After retiring from AT&T, Gene continued to serve her community through several part-time roles. She shared a job at a local bank, worked as a leasing agent at an apartment complex, and worked part time for the U.S. Census Bureau. Even with her busy career, she always made time to be there to help her kids and grandkids.
Gene and Herb were active members of "Club 15", where they made lifelong friends through evenings of dancing and fellowship. They also enjoyed many summers at their lake house at Ft. Cobb Lake. Gene was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church and the Telephone Pioneers, and she always had her camera ready so she could capture special family moments.
She is survived by daughter, Connie Jean Scott and husband Gary, of Mustang, Oklahoma; son, Mark Wayne Bridges, of Lawton, Oklahoma; daughter, Keli Marie Myers and husband Kent, of Washington, Missouri; grandchildren and their spouses, Greg and Mandi Scott, Reagan Scott, Ryan Scott, Callie and Chance Tankersley, Dr. Cameron Myers, Caleb and Katy Myers and Rylie Winn; great grandchildren and their spouses, Ciara Scott, Chayce and Kaylyn Scott, Taylor and Loren Burrage, Cordas Tankersley, Mei Xia Tankersley, Bryden Mitchell, Everett Tankersley, Azariah Tankersley, Merritt Tankersley, Daisy Myers and Wesley Myers; three great great grandchildren, Jameson Scott, Samuel Scott and Emary Burrage; and a special nephew and his wife, Steve and Kristi Tompkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, Mancye, Marvin and James Arthur "Skelly" Tompkins and two sisters, Ethel and Betty.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
